Welcome to Kenting, the crown jewel of southern Taiwan, where the pace of life slows down to the rhythm of the ocean waves. As part of our Family Travel Guides series, this itinerary is designed for those embarking on an epic journey through Taiwan who need a well-paced, kid-friendly retreat. We focus on accessible paths, engaging activities for little ones, and plenty of time to soak in the tropical atmosphere without the stress of a packed schedule.
Kenting is uniquely positioned to offer both educational marine experiences and pure beachside joy. Whether you are pushing a stroller through a lighthouse park or sharing street snacks at the night market, this three-day guide ensures that every family member, from toddlers to grandparents, finds their slice of paradise.
Day 1: Kenting, Taiwan - Marine Wonders and Night Market Bites
National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium (NMMBA)
Start your journey at one of the largest aquariums in Asia. The facility is exceptionally stroller-friendly with wide ramps and elevators. Kids will love the underwater tunnels in the Coral Kingdom Pavilion and the giant kelp forest in the Waters of the World section.
Houbihu Seafood Lunch
Head to the nearby Houbihu Port for a fresh seafood lunch. Many restaurants here offer spacious seating and high chairs. Don't miss the famous 'Sashimi platters' which are incredibly affordable, and the cooked fish dishes that are perfect for younger children.
Maobitou Park
Visit this coastal park to see the 'cat-shaped' rock formation. The paved pathways make it easy to navigate with a stroller, and the observation deck provides a stunning view of the Bashi Channel and the Taiwan Strait where the two oceans meet.
Kenting Night Market
End your first day at the vibrant Kenting Night Market. The main strip becomes a pedestrian-only zone in the evening, making it safer for families. Try the grilled corn, sweet potato balls, and fresh tropical fruit juices while enjoying the lively street performances.
Day 2: Kenting, Taiwan - Coastal Landmarks and Panoramic Views
Eluanbi Lighthouse & Park
Explore the iconic 'Light of East Asia.' The surrounding park features expansive grassy areas where kids can run freely and well-maintained boardwalks that lead toward the sea. The lighthouse itself is a beautiful backdrop for family photos.
Southernmost Point of Taiwan
Take a short, shaded walk down a paved trail to reach the official southernmost tip of the island. It is a quiet, contemplative spot with a unique wooden monument and a great view of the rugged coastline.
Longpan Park
This open grassland area offers some of the most dramatic views in Kenting. The high cliffs overlook the Pacific Ocean. While it can be windy, the flat terrain near the parking area is easy to navigate, and the scenery is unlike anywhere else in Taiwan.
Hengchun Old Town
Drive into the historic center of Hengchun. Walk along the ancient city walls and explore the West Gate. The area is filled with charming cafes and traditional bakeries, offering a more localized and quieter atmosphere for dinner.
Day 3: Kenting, Taiwan - Nature Trails and Beach Relaxation
Kenting National Forest Recreation Area
Spend your morning among ancient banyan trees and limestone caves. Stick to the lower paved trails which are accessible for strollers. The 'Silver Leaf Fig' and the 'Fairy Cave' are highlights that provide a cool, shaded environment for a morning walk.
South Bay (Nanwan)
Nanwan is the most popular beach in the area with plenty of facilities including showers and umbrella rentals. The sand is soft and the water is shallow at the shoreline, making it ideal for toddlers to splash around safely.
Baishawan (White Sand Bay)
Conclude your journey at this beautiful white sand beach, famous for its appearance in the film 'Life of Pi.' It is less crowded than Nanwan and offers a perfect sunset view. There are small kiosks nearby to grab a final coconut water or snack.
Farewell Dinner at Kenting Street
Return to the main strip for a final sit-down meal at one of the many Thai-Taiwanese fusion restaurants, which are a local specialty. Enjoy the festive atmosphere one last time before your journey continues.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kenting is from October to April when the weather is pleasantly warm and the humidity is lower. Summer (June to August) can be very hot and is peak typhoon season, which may disrupt travel plans. Spring offers the best balance for families, with temperatures hovering around 25°C (77°F), perfect for outdoor activities without the risk of overheating.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While major hotels and the Aquarium accept credit cards, the night markets and smaller local eateries are strictly cash-only. Tipping is not common in Taiwan, though a 10% service charge is often added to the bill in larger restaurants. ATMs are widely available in convenience stores like 7-Eleven throughout Kenting.
Getting Around
The most flexible way for families to explore Kenting is by renting a car or hiring a private driver for the day. For those on a budget, the Kenting Shuttle Bus (Blue and Orange lines) connects all major attractions, but be mindful of the fixed schedules. Electric scooters are popular, but they are generally not recommended for families with small children due to safety and storage constraints.
