4-Day Alishan Family Getaway: A Kid-Friendly Forest Retreat
Alishan is a fairytale destination where ancient cedars pierce the clouds and vintage trains chug through emerald valleys. For families, it offers a refreshing escape from Taiwan's humid cities, providing crisp mountain air and some of the most accessible nature trails in East Asia. Following the Family Travel Guides style, this itinerary focuses on low-stress transitions, stroller-friendly paths, and plenty of snack stops to keep the little ones happy.
Traveling with children in Alishan is surprisingly convenient thanks to the well-maintained wooden boardwalks and the reliable railway system. We have paced this trip to ensure you aren't rushing, allowing your family to soak in the 'sea of clouds' and the giant trees at a rhythm that suits both toddlers and grandparents.
The Itinerary
Day 1: Alishan, Taiwan - Arrival and Mountain Immersion
Chiayi Station to Alishan
Board the Alishan Express bus from Chiayi Station. The winding journey offers stunning views of tea plantations; sit on the right side for the best vistas.
Alishan Forest Railway Ride
After checking into your hotel, take a short, iconic ride on the red vintage train from Alishan Station to Chaoping Station. It is a thrill for kids and saves their legs for the walk back.
Chaoping Park and Skywalk
Walk through Chaoping Park. The 'Skywalk' is a flat, stroller-accessible elevated path that gives you a bird's-eye view of the forest canopy without the steep climbs.
Mountain Village Dinner
Enjoy a warm hot pot dinner in the Alishan Tourist Village. Many restaurants cater to families and offer non-spicy broth options perfect for children.
Day 2: Alishan, Taiwan - Sunrises and Sacred Trees
Zhushan Sunrise Viewing
Take the early morning train to Zhushan. While the wake-up call is early, the sight of the sun rising over Yushan (Jade Mountain) is unforgettable. Pack extra layers for the kids!
Sister Ponds Walk
Follow the gentle downhill path from Chaoping to the Sister Ponds. These two turquoise alpine lakes are surrounded by folklore and offer flat areas for children to explore.
Giant Trees Trail
Marvel at the 2,000-year-old Alishan Sacred Tree. The boardwalk here is mostly flat and manageable for kids, leading you past over 30 ancient cypress trees.
Ciyun Temple Sunset
This temple offers one of the best spots to view the 'Sea of Clouds' as the sun begins to dip. The wide courtyard is a safe place for kids to roam while you enjoy the view.
Day 3: Alishan, Taiwan - Old Streets and Tea Traditions
Fenqihu Old Street
Take the bus or train to Fenqihu, a charming village known as the 'Jiufen of the South.' It's famous for its narrow alleys filled with local snacks and toys.
Fenqihu Railway Bento
You can't visit without eating a traditional wooden box lunch. The most famous one is found at the Fenqihu Hotel, featuring a massive drumstick and local bamboo shoots.
Cedar Boardwalk Exploration
Adjacent to the village is a lush cedar forest with a very well-maintained wooden boardwalk. It's quiet, cool, and perfect for a stroller-friendly afternoon stroll.
Shizhuo Firefly Watching
If visiting between April and June, join a local tour in nearby Shizhuo to see the magical fireflies dancing over the organic tea gardens.
Day 4: Alishan, Taiwan - Tea Gardens and Clouds
Eryanping Trail
Located in Xiding, this trail is famous for its panoramic views of the tea plantations. The first section is paved and offers several pavilions for resting.
Tea Tasting and Learning
Visit a local tea factory in Xiding. Many growers offer family-friendly demonstrations on how Oolong tea is rolled and dried, including a taste of the 'High Mountain' brew.
Xiding Mist Walk
Enjoy a final walk through the misty tea gardens. The area is relatively flat and provides stunning photo opportunities of the layered mountain ridges.
Return to Chiayi
Board the final bus back down the mountain to Chiayi, arriving in time for your evening train or a visit to the Chiayi Wenhua Road Night Market.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Alishan is during the spring (March to May) for cherry blossoms and fireflies, or autumn (October to December) for clear skies and the most frequent 'Sea of Clouds.' Temperatures are significantly lower than in the lowlands, often ranging between 5°C and 15°C, so bring layers even in summer.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While the Alishan Visitor Center and major hotels accept credit cards, the small stalls in Fenqihu and local tea houses are cash-only. There is an ATM at the 7-Eleven inside the Alishan Recreation Area, which is the highest convenience store in Taiwan!
Getting Around
The Alishan Forest Railway is the most scenic way to travel, but tickets sell out weeks in advance for weekends. The 'Taiwan Tourist Shuttle' bus is the most flexible option for families, running frequently between Chiayi and Alishan. Within the park, the electric shuttle buses and trains are the primary means of transport.
