Day 1: Alishan Forest - Into the Ancient Woods
Arrival at Alishan National Forest Recreation Area
Take the public bus from Chiayi Station to the Alishan transport hub. Pay your entrance fee (discounted if you show a public transport ticket) and head straight to the visitor center to drop your bags. The area is crisp, cool, and perfectly suited for a day of walking.
Sisters Ponds (Meimei and Jiejie)
Follow the well-marked trails toward the Sisters Ponds. These two high-mountain alpine lakes are surrounded by a dense forest of cypress. The smaller pond features a charming wooden pavilion where you can sit and enjoy a cheap packed lunch while soaking in the misty atmosphere.
Shouzhen Temple

Currency & Money
Taiwan uses the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While 7-Eleven and the visitor centers accept cards, the small food stalls in Alishan Village and Fenchihu Old Street are strictly cash-only. There is an ATM at the Alishan Post Office and the convenience stores, but it's best to withdraw sufficient cash in Chiayi before heading up the mountain. Tipping is not expected in Taiwan.
Getting Around
