Day 1: Alishan Forest - Arrival & Ancient Groves
Alishan National Forest Visitor Center
Start your journey at the visitor center to grab maps and check the daily sunrise train schedule. The center is fully accessible and provides a great overview of the local ecology and indigenous Tsou culture.
Lunch at Alishan Tourist Village
Enjoy a hearty meal at one of the family-run restaurants near the train station. Most places offer kid-friendly staples like fried rice and mountain cabbage, which is exceptionally sweet in this climate.
Sisters Pond (Shimei Lake)
Take the forest train from Alishan Station to Zhaoping Station. From there, it’s a gentle, relatively flat walk to the Sisters Pond. The wooden boardwalks are stroller-friendly in most sections, surrounded by lush greenery and misty air.
Magnolia Garden & Sunset Point
Stroll through the Magnolia Garden as the late afternoon fog rolls in. Head back toward the Alishan Station platform to catch the sunset, which often creates a spectacular 'sea of clouds' effect over the valley.
Day 2: Alishan Forest - Sunrise & Sacred Giants
Zhushan Sunrise Train
The quintessential Alishan experience. The narrow-gauge train ride is a thrill for kids. Once at the top, enjoy the sunrise over Mount Jade. There are plenty of benches and snack stalls selling hot soy milk to keep everyone warm.
Giant Trees Plank Trail
After breakfast, explore the Giant Trees Trail. This area features massive red cypresses over 1,000 years old. The 'Sacred Tree' area has boardwalks that allow for easy movement even with a light stroller.
Shouzhen Temple
Visit the highest temple in Taiwan at 2,150 meters. The intricate carvings and gold-leaf interiors are visually stunning for children, and the large plaza in front is a safe place for them to stretch their legs.
Alishan Museum & 28-Generation Tree
A small, manageable museum that explains the history of the mountain logging industry. Nearby, the 'Three Generations Tree' is a fascinating natural wonder showing how new life grows from the stumps of the old.
Day 3: Fenqihu - Railway History & Tea Trails
Fenqihu Old Street
Take a short drive or bus down to Fenqihu, a charming village known as the 'Halstatt of Taiwan.' Explore the narrow alleys filled with local snacks like Aiyu jelly and fresh wasabi peas.
Traditional Railway Bento Lunch
You can't visit Fenqihu without eating a Railway Bento box. It’s a fun, nostalgic experience for kids to eat out of the classic tin or wooden boxes at the historic Fenqihu Hotel.
Fenqihu Garage & Steam Locomotives
Visit the old locomotive shed where retired steam engines are preserved. It’s a fantastic photo spot and a hit with any young train enthusiasts in the family.
Siding Erpanding Tea Trail
On your way back down the mountain, stop at Siding. The Erpanding Trail offers a short, easy walk through manicured tea plantations with breathtaking views of the mist-covered mountains before heading home.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Alishan is from March to May for cherry blossoms or October to December for clear skies and the famous sea of clouds. Temperatures are significantly lower than in the plains—often 10-15 degrees Celsius cooler—so always pack layers, even in summer. Humidity is high, and afternoon showers are common, so bring rain gear for the kids.
Currency & Money
The currency used is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While the Alishan Visitor Center and major hotels accept credit cards, many small stalls in the Tourist Village and Fenqihu Old Street are cash-only. There is an ATM located inside the 7-Eleven at the Alishan Tourist Village, which is officially the highest 7-Eleven in Taiwan!
Getting Around
The Alishan Forest Railway is the most scenic way to move between major points like Zhaoping and Sacred Tree stations. For reaching Alishan from Chiayi, the Alishan Express Bus (7322) is frequent and reliable. Once inside the park, a dedicated shuttle bus runs between the main parking area and the various trailheads, which is very convenient for families with strollers.
