Parliament Gardens

Penduka Village

National Art Gallery of Namibia
Check out the latest contemporary African art. The gallery often features revolving exhibitions from local artists and is usually free or very low-cost to enter. It provides a modern contrast to the historical sites visited on Day 1.
Avis Dam Nature Reserve
Join the locals for a walk around Avis Dam on the eastern edge of the city. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching and hiking. It costs nothing to enter and offers a beautiful rugged landscape that hints at the wilderness Namibia is famous for.
Schwerinsburg Castle (Exterior)
Take a walk up the hill to see one of Windhoek's three castles. While it is now a private residence (the Italian Ambassador's home), the walk up offers a great sunset view over the city and a look at some of the city's most prestigious old architecture.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Windhoek is during the dry winter months from May to September. During this time, the days are sunny and pleasant (around 20-25°C), though nights can get quite chilly. This is also the best time for wildlife viewing if you are heading to Etosha afterward. The summer months (November to March) can be very hot and are the primary rainy season.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both currencies are accepted interchangeably throughout the city. While many shops and restaurants accept cards, you will need cash for shared taxis and street food in markets like Katutura. Tipping of 10% is standard in cafes, but not expected for street food.
Getting Around
The most cost-effective way to get around Windhoek is via shared taxis. These operate on fixed routes and usually cost around N$13 to N$15 per person for a standard drop-off. Simply point in the direction you want to go. For more convenience, you can use the LEFA app (Namibia’s version of Uber), though it is more expensive than the shared taxi system.
