Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Taitung is from October to April when the weather is cool and dry. Summers (June to August) can be extremely hot and are prone to typhoons, though this is also when the famous Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place. If you travel in the shoulder season, you'll find lower hostel prices and fewer crowds.
Currency & Money
Taitung uses the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While major hotels and some restaurants take cards, Taitung is very much a cash-based society, especially for the night markets, hostels, and local buses. ATMs are widely available in 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores. Tipping is not expected in Taiwan.
Getting Around
The best way to get around Taitung on a budget is by using the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (East Coast Line and Rift Valley Line) or renting a bicycle. For longer distances, local trains are efficient and cheap. If you can ride a scooter, renting one for about $12 USD a day is a popular way to see the coastline, but for the ultra-budget traveler, the bus and bike combo is best.
