3-Day Taichung Family Itinerary: Kid-Friendly & Relaxed

Taichung is often called the most livable city in Taiwan, and for families, it is a absolute dream. With wide sidewalks, lush green belts, and world-class museums, it offers a refreshing pace compared to the high-octane energy of Taipei. This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy, ensuring that every stop is stroller-accessible and engaging for little ones while still hitting the major cultural landmarks.

We have designed these three days to minimize transit time, focusing on one major district per day. Whether you are letting the kids run free in the Calligraphy Greenway or sampling the city’s famous sun cakes, you will find Taichung to be an effortless destination for all ages.

Day 1: West District - Science and Greenery

10:00 AM

National Museum of Natural Science

Start your journey at one of Asia's best science museums. The Life Science Hall, featuring massive moving dinosaurs, is a guaranteed hit for kids. The museum is fully stroller-accessible with elevators and nursing rooms available for parents.

💡 Flight Hack: Secure your airport transfers from Taoyuan International Airport directly to your Taichung hotel to avoid hauling luggage on the train with kids. Klook Private Transfers.
01:00 PM

Calligraphy Greenway

Enjoy a leisurely walk down this long, linear park that connects the museum to the arts district. It is a car-free zone perfect for toddlers to burn off energy. Stop by the various street performers and small art installations along the way.

03:30 PM

Shen Ji New Village

This former government dormitory has been transformed into a creative cluster of small boutiques and cafes. It is incredibly photogenic and offers plenty of artisanal snacks like cream puffs and bubble tea that the whole family will enjoy.

06:30 PM

Park Lane by CMP

End your first day at this eco-friendly shopping complex. The surrounding area is filled with family-friendly restaurants, and the indoor vertical garden provides a cool, breezy atmosphere for a relaxed dinner.

Day 2: Central District - History and Sweet Treats

10:00 AM

Taichung Park

Visit the city's oldest park, featuring the iconic Huaxin Pavilion. You can rent a small boat to row across the lake, which is a classic Taichung family activity. The paths are flat and shaded by ancient banyan trees, making it ideal for morning strolls.

12:30 PM

Miyahara Ice Cream

Housed in a beautifully restored former eye clinic, this shop looks like something out of Harry Potter. While the interior is stunning, the real draw is the ice cream with dozens of toppings. Grab a cup and sit by the nearby canal to enjoy it.

💡 Ticket Hack: Skip the long lines at popular city attractions by booking a Taichung City Pass in advance. Klook Attractions Pass.
03:00 PM

Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park

Located in an old distillery, this massive open space hosts rotating art exhibitions and hands-on workshops. The wide-open plazas are perfect for kids to run around safely away from city traffic.

06:00 PM

Second Market

Experience local life at this historic market. While it is famous for its breakfast, many stalls serve incredible braised pork rice and radish cakes through the evening. It’s a great place to introduce kids to authentic Taiwanese flavors in a casual setting.

Day 3: Xitun District - Modern Marvels and Night Markets

10:00 AM

Rainbow Village

Located in the Nantun district (a short taxi ride from Xitun), this vibrant village was painted by a single veteran to save it from demolition. The bright colors and whimsical characters are a delight for children and offer the best photo opportunities in the city.

01:00 PM

National Taichung Theater

Designed by Toyo Ito, this architectural wonder has no straight walls. The rooftop garden and the water features at the entrance are fascinating for kids to explore. The interior is air-conditioned and features several boutiques and quiet cafes.

04:00 PM

Maple Garden

This unique sunken park acts as a peaceful basin in the middle of the skyscraper district. It features a large pond with ducks and a bridge, providing a serene environment for a late afternoon break before the night market rush.

💡 Where to Stay: Stay in the Xitun District for easy access to the night markets and modern amenities. The Lin Hotel Taichung.
06:30 PM

Fengjia Night Market

Conclude your trip at Taiwan's largest night market. While it can be crowded, the main streets are wide enough for strollers earlier in the evening. Don't miss the 'sweet potato balls' or the 'egg-wrapped sausage' – both are easy-to-eat favorites for kids.

Best Time & Weather

The best time to visit Taichung is during the autumn (October to December) or spring (March to May). During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild and avoids the heavy rainfall and typhoons of the summer. Taichung is known for having better weather than Taipei, often staying sunny even when the north is drizzling.

Currency & Money

The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). While major department stores and hotels accept credit cards, Taichung's famous night markets and small local eateries are strictly cash-only. Tipping is not expected in Taiwan, but a 10% service charge is often added to the bill in sit-down restaurants.

Getting Around

Taichung’s bus system is extensive and free for the first 10 kilometers if you use an EasyCard (YouYouKa) or iPass. For families, the local buses are equipped with priority seating and space for strollers. For longer distances or when kids are tired, Uber and local taxis are affordable and readily available throughout the city.
