2-Day Family Weekend Getaway to East Coast Singapore
Singapore's East Coast is the ultimate breath of fresh air for families looking to escape the hustle of the downtown core. This region is a haven for parents, offering wide-open coastal parks, incredibly safe environments, and a unique blend of modern play areas and traditional Peranakan culture. Our Family Travel Guides approach ensures your weekend is paced for little legs, with plenty of shade and accessible amenities.
From the iconic red-brick playgrounds to the colorful shophouses of Joo Chiat, this itinerary captures the essence of a local weekend. We've prioritized stroller-accessible routes and areas where the kids can run free while you soak in the sea breeze. Get ready for a stress-free weekend where the only thing you'll need to worry about is whether to have one or two scoops of ice cream at the beach.
Day 1: East Coast, Singapore - Sun, Sand, and Sea Spray
Coastal PlayGrove
Start your morning at Singapore's tallest outdoor play feature. Located at the former Big Splash site, this massive vertical challenge and water play area is perfect for burning off energy. The ground-level water jets are a hit with toddlers and are fully stroller accessible.
Marine Cove Lunch
A short, breezy walk along the promenade leads you to Marine Cove. This area is specifically designed for families, featuring a massive inclusive playground and a variety of dining options ranging from local favorites to Western cafes with ample high chairs.
East Coast Park Beach and Cycling
Rent a family-sized surrey bike (a four-wheeled pedal car) to explore the dedicated cycling paths. It's a great way to see the coastline without tiring out the little ones. Afterward, find a shaded spot under the casuarina trees for some classic sandcastle building.
East Coast Lagoon Food Village
Experience an authentic Singaporean dinner at this seaside hawker center. It is one of the few open-air food courts by the beach. Try the Satay, BBQ Chicken Wings, and Carrot Cake. It’s casual, noisy (so kids are welcome), and offers great views of the sunset.
Day 2: East Coast, Singapore - Heritage and Shopping
Joo Chiat Heritage Walk
Explore the vibrant, pastel-colored shophouses of Joo Chiat and Katong. This area is the heart of Peranakan culture. The pavements are relatively wide and stroller-friendly. Don't miss the famous 'Koon Seng Road' houses for the perfect family photo backdrop.
328 Katong Laksa
Stop for a legendary bowl of Katong Laksa. This local delicacy features thick vermicelli cut into short pieces, eaten only with a spoon—making it surprisingly easy to share with kids. For those who don't like spice, there are plenty of nearby cafes offering kaya toast and eggs.
Parkway Parade and Marine Parade
Escape the afternoon humidity at Parkway Parade, a large family-centric mall. It features an indoor playground and plenty of nursing rooms. It's an excellent spot for some retail therapy or to grab any baby supplies you might need while the kids enjoy the air conditioning.
Siglap Village Dinner
Conclude your weekend in the laid-back neighborhood of Siglap. This residential enclave is filled with cozy, family-run bistros and ice cream parlors. It's much quieter than the beach parks, providing a relaxing atmosphere for your final meal of the trip.
Best Time & Weather
Singapore is a year-round destination, but the best time for East Coast outdoor activities is during the drier months from February to August. Humidity is always high, so plan outdoor play for the early morning or late afternoon. The Northeast Monsoon (November to January) often brings afternoon thunderstorms, so keep a foldable stroller rain cover and an umbrella handy.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Singapore Dollar (SGD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including most stalls at the East Coast Lagoon Food Village via QR codes or contactless payment. Tipping is not a standard practice in Singapore as a 10% service charge is usually included in restaurant bills.
Getting Around
The East Coast is well-connected by the newly opened Thomson-East Coast Line (MRT) and an extensive bus network. For families, the 'Grab' or 'Gojek' ride-hailing apps are highly recommended, as they offer 'GrabFamily' options which include a child booster seat. Most of the East Coast Park itself is connected by a flat, 15km long coastal path that is entirely stroller and wheelchair accessible.
