Best Time & Weather

The best time to visit Sanya on a budget is during the shoulder seasons of March to May or September to October. During these months, the weather is warm and sunny (25°C - 30°C), but you avoid the massive price hikes and crowds of the Chinese New Year and the winter high season. June to August is very hot and marks the typhoon season, which can disrupt travel plans but offers the absolute lowest prices.

Currency & Money

Sanya uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). While cash is still accepted, China is a nearly cashless society. It is highly recommended to set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your international card before arriving. Tipping is not expected and can sometimes be seen as confusing. Always carry a small amount of cash for the older stalls in the First Market.

Getting Around

Sanya has an excellent and very affordable public bus system with fares ranging from 2 to 15 RMB depending on the distance. Use Baidu Maps or Amap for real-time bus schedules. For shorter distances, the 'HelloBike' or 'Meituan' blue/yellow bikes are available everywhere via their respective apps. If you need a car, the Didi app is the local version of Uber and is very reliable.
