Sanya, often called the 'Hawaii of China,' is a dream destination for families seeking a blend of tropical relaxation and modern convenience. This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy, prioritizing a slower pace, stroller-accessible locations, and activities that keep little ones engaged without exhausting the grown-ups.
With its soft white sands, shallow waters, and world-class resorts, Sanya is remarkably easy to navigate with children. We have focused on grouping activities by district to minimize transit time, ensuring you spend more time building sandcastles and less time in taxis.
Day 1: Yalong Bay - Tropical Heights and Shoreline Sights
Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park
Start your morning with breathtaking views of the coastline. This park offers electric shuttle buses that take you to the top, making it very manageable for families. The glass bridge is a highlight for older kids, while the shaded walkways are perfect for a gentle stroll.
Lunch at Yalong Bay Laohuai Market
Head down to this food court area which offers a wide variety of local Hainanese chicken rice and mild noodle dishes that are generally a hit with picky eaters. The area is spacious and easy to navigate with a stroller.
Yalong Bay Public Beach
Spend the afternoon at what is widely considered Sanya's best beach. The sand is incredibly fine and the waves are typically gentle. Many resorts along the strip offer day-use facilities, or you can find a shaded spot under the palm trees for some downtime.
Yalong Bay Central Square Dinner
End the day at the Central Square, which features several family-friendly restaurants ranging from Western pizza to local seafood. It’s a pedestrian-friendly zone where kids can run around safely before heading back to the hotel.
Day 2: Haitang Bay - Marine Wonders and Shopping
The Lost Chambers Aquarium
Located within the Atlantis Sanya complex, this aquarium is a visual masterpiece. It is entirely indoors and air-conditioned, providing a perfect escape from the midday sun. The floor-to-ceiling tanks filled with sharks and rays will mesmerize children of all ages.
Lunch at Atlantis Sanya
Choose from several casual dining options within the resort. There are many buffet-style restaurants that cater specifically to families with child-sized furniture and kid-friendly food stations.
Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Complex
Even if you aren't a shopper, this architectural marvel is worth a visit. It is the world’s largest offshore duty-free shop, featuring wide walkways, clean baby-changing rooms, and plenty of places to grab a cold juice or ice cream.
Haitang Bay Beach Walk
Enjoy a sunset walk along the Haitang Bay coastline. While the water here is often too rough for swimming compared to Yalong Bay, the wide promenades are excellent for a scenic stroller walk followed by dinner at one of the nearby upscale mall restaurants.
Day 3: Sanya Bay - Culture and Coastal Views
Sanya Romance Park
This cultural theme park is a fantastic mix of history and entertainment. It features various 'ancient' streets, interactive performances, and a dedicated indoor children's play area. The main show is spectacular, though it can be loud, so consider ear protection for very young infants.
Local Seafood Lunch near Jiefang Road
Head toward the city center for a more authentic taste of Sanya. Look for restaurants that offer 'Steam Seafood Pots,' which are healthy, fresh, and fascinating for kids to watch as the food cooks right on the table.
Luhuitou Park
Take the electric golf carts up the hill to avoid the steep climb. This park offers the best panoramic views of Sanya City and Phoenix Island. It is a great spot for family photos and has several flat viewing platforms that are easy to access with a stroller.
First Market Night Visit
Finish your trip with a visit to the First Market. While it can be busy, the vibrant atmosphere, colorful tropical fruits, and local crafts make for a memorable experience. It’s a great place to pick up some last-minute souvenirs and enjoy some local street snacks.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Sanya is from November to March when the weather is pleasantly warm and dry, averaging around 25°C (77°F). Summers (June to September) can be very hot, humid, and prone to occasional typhoons, which might make outdoor activities with children more challenging.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). While high-end hotels and malls accept international credit cards, most local vendors rely on mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay. It is highly recommended to set these up before arrival, though carrying some cash for small purchases is still a good backup.
Getting Around
Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are the most convenient way for families to get around Sanya. They are affordable and usually well-maintained. For a more scenic route, the city's bus network is extensive, but can be crowded during peak hours. If you are staying in the major bay areas, many resorts offer complimentary shuttle buses to popular attractions.
