Best Time to Visit Namibia
The best time to visit Namibia is during the dry winter season from July to October. During this period, wildlife viewing in Etosha is at its peak as animals congregate around waterholes. The skies are crystal clear, and temperatures are pleasant (though nights in the desert can drop below freezing). For photography, the shoulder months of May and June offer dust-free air and vibrant green landscapes, while the 'emerald' season from January to March is perfect for birdwatching and seeing newborn animals, despite the occasional afternoon thunderstorm.
Currency & Money
Namibia uses the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both currencies are accepted everywhere in the country. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted at luxury lodges, gas stations, and restaurants in major towns. However, it is essential to carry some cash for tips and small purchases in rural areas. Tipping culture is generally 10% for good service in restaurants and approximately USD 10-15 per day for safari guides.
Getting Around Namibia
For a luxury escape, the most efficient and spectacular way to travel is via light aircraft transfers (Fly-in Safari). This saves days of driving on gravel roads and provides breathtaking aerial views. However, if you choose to drive, a 4x4 vehicle is mandatory for comfort and safety. Namibia's road network is well-maintained but largely consists of gravel (C-roads). Domestic flights between Windhoek, Swakopmund, and Etosha are available via FlyNamibia, providing a faster alternative to long drives.
