3-Day Budget Backpacking Guide to Davos
Davos might be famous for the World Economic Forum and luxury ski resorts, but it is surprisingly accessible for the savvy backpacker on an epic journey. By leveraging local guest cards and the abundance of natural beauty, you can experience the heart of the Graubünden heritage without the billionaire price tag.
This itinerary focuses on the 'Davos Premium Card' strategy, which provides free local public transport and discounted mountain railways. We will prioritize self-catering from local supermarkets like Migros and Coop to keep your daily spending near the $48 mark while still soaking in the world-class scenery.
Day 1: Davos Platz - Alpine Lakes and High Streets
Davosersee (Lake Davos)
Start your journey with a refreshing 4km circuit walk around Lake Davos. It is completely free and offers crystal clear reflections of the surrounding peaks. In the summer, find a spot on the grass to relax among the locals.
Picnic at Kurpark
Head to the Migros supermarket in Davos Platz to grab a fresh loaf of bread and local cheese. Take your haul to the Kurpark, a beautifully maintained public garden where you can enjoy a budget lunch with a view of the Vaillant Arena.
The Promenade Window Shopping
Walk the famous Promenade, the main artery of Davos. While the boutiques are pricey, the architecture and the vibe are free to enjoy. Visit the Davos Platz church (St. Theodul) to see its historic steeple and quiet interior.
Davos Youth Hostel Social Hour
Check into the Davos Youth Hostel, known for its incredible views and social atmosphere. Use the communal kitchen to prepare dinner and meet fellow backpackers to swap stories about the Swiss trails.
Day 2: Davos Dorf - Deep Valleys and Wild Nature
Sertig Valley Exploration
Use your Davos Premium Card to take the free bus (Line 308) into the Sertig Valley. This is one of the most picturesque glacial valleys in Switzerland. The bus ride itself is a sightseeing tour through traditional Walser mountain villages.
Sertig Waterfall Hike
Follow the easy trail from the bus stop to the thundering waterfall at the end of the valley. It costs nothing to visit and provides the perfect backdrop for photos. Breathe in the purest air in the Alps.
Kirchner Museum Park
While the museum has an entry fee, the surrounding park and the building's exterior—a masterpiece of modern glass architecture—are worth a visit. It is a central hub for the town's artistic identity.
Pizzeria Padrino
For a rare treat that won't break the bank, head to a local pizzeria. Sharing a large pizza is one of the most cost-effective ways to eat out in Davos. It’s a popular spot for locals and seasonal workers.
Day 3: Schatzalp - The Magic Mountain
Schatzalp Funicular Ascent
Take the historic funicular up to Schatzalp, known as the 'Magic Mountain.' If you have the guest card, the fare is significantly reduced. This area was the inspiration for Thomas Mann’s famous novel.
Alpinum Schatzalp
Explore the botanical garden which houses over 5,000 species of high-altitude plants from around the world. The paths offer panoramic views of the entire Davos valley without requiring a strenuous climb.
Monstein Village Walk
Take the train (free with card) to Davos Monstein. This tiny village is home to the highest brewery in Europe. While the beer costs money, walking through the sun-blackened timber houses is a free trip back in time.
Davos Dorf Sunset Viewpoint
End your 3-day journey by walking up the hills behind Davos Dorf station as the sun sets. It’s the perfect quiet spot to reflect on your epic journey through the Graubünden region before heading to your next destination.
Best Time & Weather
For budget travelers, the shoulder seasons of late June and September are ideal. The weather is stable enough for hiking, but the peak winter crowds (and prices) are absent. July and August offer the best weather but higher demand for hostel beds. Winter is strictly for those with a much larger budget due to ski pass costs.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While Switzerland is expensive, almost everywhere in Davos accepts contactless card payments (Visa/Mastercard). Tipping is not mandatory as a service charge is included in prices, but rounding up to the nearest Franc is appreciated for good service.
Getting Around
The best way to get around is the local bus and train network. Upon checking into any official accommodation (including the hostel), you receive the Davos Premium Card. This grants you free travel on the local buses and the Rhätische Bahn between Davos Dorf, Davos Platz, and Filisur, making exploration very affordable.
