Day 1: Interlaken, Switzerland - Arrival & Park Life
Höhematte Park
Start your trip at the green heart of Interlaken. This massive open meadow offers the best views of the Jungfrau peak and is the perfect spot for kids to run around while watching paragliders descend from the sky. The paths are perfectly flat and stroller-friendly.
Höheweg Promenade Walk
Stroll along the main boulevard connecting Interlaken West and East. This area is lined with charming cafes, watch boutiques, and chocolate shops. It is entirely pedestrian-friendly and offers plenty of benches for rest stops.
Interlaken Monastery & Castle
Visit this historic site located just off the main strip. The former Augustinian monastery features a beautiful garden and a quiet courtyard that is much calmer than the busy shopping streets, ideal for a peaceful afternoon walk with a sleeping toddler.
Family Dinner at Stadthaus
End your first day at a traditional restaurant that welcomes families. Enjoy Swiss classics like Rösti or fondue in a relaxed setting where children are common guests.
Day 2: Interlaken, Switzerland - Heights & Chocolate
Harder Kulm Funicular
Take the modern funicular up to the "Top of Interlaken." The ride is short and exciting for kids, and the viewing platform at the top offers breathtaking vistas of both lakes. The restaurant at the summit has a large terrace and high chairs available.
Interlaken Alpine Wildlife Park
Located right next to the base station of the Harder Kulm funicular, this small, free park allows children to see Alpine ibexes and marmots up close. It is a quick and educational stop that requires very little walking.
Funky Chocolate Club
Join a chocolate-making workshop where kids can get their hands messy and create their own Swiss chocolate bars. It is an indoor activity that is both delicious and engaging for all ages.
Aare River Sunset Walk
Follow the paved path along the Aare River. The turquoise water is mesmerizing, and the path is wide enough for double strollers, leading you back toward the town center for a casual evening meal.
Day 3: Interlaken, Switzerland - Lakes & Waterfalls
Lake Brienz Boat Cruise
Board a historic steamship or a modern motor vessel from the Interlaken Ost pier. The boats are stroller-accessible and provide a gentle way to see the mountains from the water. Kids will love the wind in their hair and the spacious decks.
Giessbach Falls
Hop off the boat at the Giessbach station and take the oldest funicular in Europe up to the Grand Hotel. You can walk to the base of the spectacular waterfalls on a path that is relatively easy to navigate, though some sections near the water may have steps.
Bönigen Village Discovery
Take the boat or a quick bus to Bönigen. This village is famous for its 16th-century wooden chalets. There is a great lakeside playground here where children can play while parents enjoy the views of the surrounding peaks.
Casual Riverside Dining
Return to Interlaken for dinner at a local pizzeria. Pizza is a universal favorite for kids and Interlaken has several excellent spots near the West station.
Day 4: Interlaken, Switzerland - Caves & Old Towns
St. Beatus Caves
Take a short bus ride to these legendary caves. While the interior of the cave has steps and is not stroller-accessible (you can park strollers at the entrance), the outdoor park area features a dragon-themed playground and a waterfall that kids will adore.
Unterseen Historic District
Cross the bridge to the older, quieter side of Interlaken. Unterseen features a charming town square, historic buildings, and a much slower pace than the main tourist strip. It is a great place for a family lunch at a local bakery.
Lake Thun Lido
If the weather is warm, head to the local swimming area (Lido). It offers heated pools, a shallow area for toddlers, and direct access to the lake. It is the ultimate spot for a relaxed final afternoon.
Farewell Dinner at Husi Bierhaus
Enjoy a final hearty meal at this popular spot known for its friendly service and large portions. Their menu has something for everyone, making it a favorite for families ending their Swiss journey.
Best Time & Weather
The best time for a family trip to Interlaken is during the summer months (June to August) when the weather is warm (20°C - 25°C) and all mountain transport is operational. Spring (May) and Autumn (September) are also beautiful, offering fewer crowds and cooler, comfortable temperatures for walking. Winter is magical for snow-related activities but requires much heavier packing for small children.
Currency & Money
Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF). While credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at small kiosks and on boats, it is useful to carry a small amount of cash for public restrooms or small mountain stalls. Tipping is not strictly required as a service charge is included in restaurant bills, but rounding up the bill is a common way to show appreciation.
Getting Around
Interlaken is highly walkable, but the best way to get around with a family is the local bus system, which is free if you stay in local accommodations and receive the Interlaken Guest Card. For trips to nearby villages or mountain tops, the Swiss Travel Pass is the most convenient option, as it covers boats, trains, and offers discounts on mountain funiculars while allowing children under 16 to travel free with a Family Card.
