Tierpark Dahlhölzli (Zoo)
A short, scenic walk along the river leads you to Bern's zoo. The 'Dahlhölzli' is famous for its woodland setting. There is a large petting zoo section and a fantastic wooden playground that is specifically designed for younger children, making it a highlight for any family trip.

Gurten – Park im Grünen

Gurten Play Park & Picnic
Spend the afternoon enjoying the miniature railway, the climbing frames, and the 'Kleine Gurten' play area. There are dedicated barbecue spots if you want to have a Swiss-style picnic, or you can dine at the self-service restaurant which has a large kids' play corner inside.
Federal Palace (Bundeshaus) Fountains
Head back to the city center to the Bundesplatz. In front of the Parliament building, there are 26 water jets representing the Swiss cantons. On a warm day, children love running through the dancing fountains. It’s a great spot to sit and soak in the local atmosphere.
Farewell Dinner at Kornhausplatz
Celebrate your final night at one of the restaurants near the Kornhausplatz. This area is famous for the Kindlifresserbrunnen (Child Eater Fountain), a bizarre but historic landmark. The restaurants here offer grand interiors and high chairs, catering perfectly to a final family feast.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Bern for families is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild enough for long walks, and the parks are in full bloom or vibrant autumn colors. Summer (July and August) is beautiful and allows for swimming in the Aare, but it can be more crowded. Winter offers a magical Christmas market atmosphere, though some outdoor playgrounds may be chilly.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While Switzerland is not in the EU, many places in Bern will accept Euros but will give change in Francs at a less favorable rate. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at small cafes and kiosks. Tipping is included in the service charge at restaurants, but it is common to round up to the nearest 5 or 10 Francs for exceptional service.
Getting Around
Bern has an excellent public transport system consisting of trams and buses.
