Best Time to Visit Africa & Oceania
January is a strategic month for this multi-continent route. In Central Africa (Rwanda/Uganda), it marks the short dry season. The mountain trails are firmer, and the lack of heavy rain makes wildlife spotting much easier and more comfortable for families. In Oceania (New Caledonia/Vanuatu), January is mid-summer. While this is the 'wet season' for the islands, it usually manifests as short, afternoon tropical showers that cool the air. The seas are at their warmest, perfect for snorkeling, and the landscapes are a vibrant, lush green that perfectly fits the 'Scenic Route' theme.
Visas & Border Crossings
For the African leg, the East Africa Tourist Visa is highly recommended. It allows multiple entries between Rwanda and Uganda for a single fee ($100), saving time and paperwork at the Cyanika border. In Oceania, New Caledonia is a French Overseas Territory; check if your nationality requires a specific Schengen-equivalent visa. Vanuatu is generally visa-free for many Western nationalities for up to 30 days. Always ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay and carry digital copies of your yellow fever vaccination certificates, as they are sometimes requested when arriving from Africa into the Pacific.
Getting Around Africa & Oceania
International travel between Africa and Oceania requires a major hub connection, typically through Dubai (Emirates) or Singapore (Singapore Airlines). Within Africa, we recommend private 4x4 vehicles for flexibility and safety with children. In New Caledonia, a rental car is essential for exploring the scenic southern 'Red Earth' routes. In Vanuatu, domestic flights with Air Vanuatu are the only practical way to jump between the islands of Efate and Tanna. Always allow a 'buffer day' for transcontinental flights to help the family adjust to significant time zone shifts.
