Zhangjiajie is a destination that looks like it was plucked straight from a fantasy novel, famously inspiring the floating Hallelujah Mountains in James Cameron’s Avatar. While the terrain is rugged, our Family Travel Guides approach ensures you can experience this UNESCO World Heritage site without exhausting the little ones or navigating endless stairs with a stroller.
This weekend getaway focuses on the most accessible highlights, utilizing the city's world-class cable cars and elevators to maximize views while minimizing physical strain. By splitting your time between the National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain, you'll see the best of Zhangjiajie with a pace that allows for plenty of snack breaks and photo ops.
Day 1: Wulingyuan - Into the Avatar Realm
Bailong Elevator Ascent
Start your adventure by soaring up the side of a cliff on the world's tallest outdoor elevator. It is a thrilling two-minute ride that saves you hours of climbing and is perfectly safe and exciting for children.
Yuanjiajie Scenic Area
Once at the top, explore the Yuanjiajie area. The paths here are relatively flat and well-paved, making them the most stroller-friendly sections of the park. You'll see the 'First Bridge under Heaven' and the iconic Southern Sky Column.
Tianzi Mountain via Cable Car
Take the park shuttle to Tianzi Mountain. Instead of hiking down, take the Tianzi Mountain Cable Car. The descent offers a bird's-eye view of the 'sea of peaks' and is a gentle way for kids to see the limestone towers up close.
Xibu Street Evening
Located in Wulingyuan, this pedestrian street is perfect for a family dinner. It features traditional Tujia architecture, water features that kids love, and plenty of shops selling local handicrafts and snacks.
Day 2: Yongding - The Soul of the City
Tianmen Mountain Cableway
Board the cableway right in the city center. It’s one of the longest in the world, taking you from the urban bustle directly to the misty peaks of Tianmen Mountain. It's a comfortable 30-minute ride that feels like a sightseeing tour in itself.
The Glass Skywalk & Tianmen Cave
For brave families, the glass skywalks offer an incredible view of the depths below. Afterward, use the massive indoor escalators to reach Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate). The escalators are a lifesaver, bypassing the famous 999 steps.
Tujia Folk Customs Park
Head back down to the city to visit this cultural park. It features the world's tallest wooden stilted house and offers a relaxed environment for kids to learn about the local Tujia minority culture through folk performances and architecture.
Downtown Dinner at Dayong Town
End your trip in the newly developed Dayong Ancient Town area. It's a clean, spacious district with various restaurant options ranging from local spicy Hunan cuisine to more kid-friendly international bites.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Zhangjiajie is during the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to November. During these months, the weather is mild, and the foliage is either lush green or vibrant autumn gold. Summers can be very hot and crowded, while winters are cold and paths can become slippery, which isn't ideal for young children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). While major hotels and large restaurants accept international credit cards, China is a mobile-payment society. It is highly recommended to set up AliPay or WeChat Pay on your smartphone before arrival. Tipping is not a common practice in Zhangjiajie and is generally not expected in restaurants or taxis.
Getting Around
Zhangjiajie is split into two main areas: the city center (Yongding) and the National Park area (Wulingyuan), which are about 45 minutes apart by taxi. Within the National Forest Park, a fleet of eco-friendly shuttle buses is included in your ticket price and connects all major cable car stations. For city travel, Didi (China's version of Uber) is the most convenient and transparent way for families to get around.
