Xi'an is one of the few places in the world where history feels like a living, breathing part of the daily routine. For families, it offers a unique blend of grand ancient architecture and safe, pedestrian-friendly districts that make navigating with children surprisingly easy. This itinerary focuses on a 'Family Travel Guide' style, prioritizing accessible pathways, engaging visuals for kids, and a pace that allows for nap times and snack breaks.
We have curated this 4-day experience to minimize long transit times while hitting all the major landmarks. By focusing on one major district each day, your family can enjoy the rich culture of the Tang Dynasty without the fatigue often associated with large-scale international travel.
Day 1: Xi'an, China - Ancient Walls and Flavorful Alleys
Ancient City Wall (South Gate)
Start your journey at the South Gate (Yongning Gate), the most beautifully restored entrance to the city. The wall is wide, flat, and perfect for strollers. For older kids, you can rent a tandem bike or take an electric cart to enjoy the panoramic views of the old city and modern skyline.
The Muslim Quarter (Huimin Jie)
Take a 15-minute walk to the heart of Xi'an's food scene. This bustling area is a sensory delight for children, with vendors pulling long noodles and making candy by hand. Try the famous 'Roujiamo' (Chinese burger) for a kid-approved lunch.
Great Mosque of Xi'an
Hidden just off the main market street, this mosque is a peaceful garden oasis. It features a unique mix of Chinese architecture and Islamic motifs, providing plenty of quiet space for children to run around away from the crowds.
Bell and Drum Tower Square
As the sun sets, head to the central square to see the iconic towers light up. The wide-open pedestrian plaza is a popular spot for local families to fly kites or play, making it a great place for your kids to interact with local peers.
Day 2: Xi'an, China - The Terracotta Army Adventure
Terracotta Warriors Museum
Head to the world-famous mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Pit 1 is the most impressive, and the museum provides elevators for stroller access. The sheer scale of the 8,000 soldiers will captivate even the youngest travelers.
Huaqing Palace and Gardens
Located near the Warriors, these imperial hot springs and gardens offer beautiful lakes and mountains. The paths are paved and easy to navigate, offering a relaxing environment for an afternoon stroll after the busy morning museum tour.
Tang Dynasty Cultural District
Return to the city and explore the pedestrian streets around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The area is filled with performers in traditional Tang Dynasty costumes, which is always a hit with children interested in 'princes and princesses'.
Great Tang All Day Mall
This is not a traditional mall, but a massive outdoor pedestrian boulevard filled with lights, sculptures, and free street performances. It is incredibly safe and designed specifically for families to wander in the evening.
Day 3: Xi'an, China - Pagodas and Park Play
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
Visit this landmark of the Tang Dynasty. The North Square features the largest musical fountain show in Asia. Kids will love the synchronized water and music, and the surrounding gardens are perfect for a family picnic.
Qujiang Pool Park
A short taxi ride away, this massive park features a lake where families can rent paddle boats. It is much quieter than the city center and provides a necessary break for kids to play in the grass or by the water.
Tang Paradise
This cultural theme park is a reconstruction of a Tang Dynasty garden. It offers puppet shows, traditional dance, and acrobatic performances that are very engaging for children while staying educational for adults.
Musical Fountain Night Show
Head back to the North Square of the Pagoda for the evening fountain performance. The light show is even more spectacular at night and is free to watch from the plaza.
Day 4: Xi'an, China - History and Modern Relaxation
Xi'an Museum and Small Wild Goose Pagoda
This site is often less crowded than its 'giant' counterpart. The park surrounding the pagoda is beautiful, and the museum offers a great introduction to the city's timeline without being overwhelming.
Qujiang Ocean World
To keep the kids excited on the final day, visit this large aquarium. It features underwater tunnels and sea animal shows, providing a nice indoor alternative if the weather is too hot or cold.
Defu Alley (Bar & Cafe Street)
Located near the South Gate, this quiet alley is full of quaint cafes and small shops. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee and some snacks while the kids enjoy some downtime before your departure.
South Gate Night Markets
Finish your trip with some souvenir shopping and local snacks around the city wall. The atmosphere is festive but manageable for families with young children.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Xi'an is during the Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild, usually between 15°C and 25°C, which is ideal for walking the city walls or exploring the Terracotta Warriors. Summers can be intensely hot and humid, while winters are dry and cold, sometimes with light snow.
Currency & Money
Xi'an uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). While major hotels and large malls accept international credit cards, the city runs on mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay. Most street vendors and small restaurants will not accept foreign cards, so it is essential to have these apps linked to your card or carry enough cash for small purchases. Tipping is not expected and can sometimes be seen as confusing by local staff.
Getting Around
The Xi'an Metro is the most efficient and stroller-friendly way to get around, with elevators at almost every station. For families, the 'Didi' app (the local version of Uber) is highly recommended as it allows you to call a private car directly to your location for a very low cost. Taxis are also plentiful, but ensure the meter is running or agree on a price beforehand.
