Best Time to Visit United Kingdom
The best time for a family trip to the UK is during the late spring (May and June) or early autumn (September). During these periods, the weather is generally mild, the parks are in full bloom or beautiful autumn colors, and the massive summer crowds haven't yet peaked. This makes navigating museums with strollers and finding seats on trains much easier. If you enjoy festive lights, December is magical, but be prepared for cold temperatures and early sunsets.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the British Pound (£/GBP). The UK is a global leader in contactless payments; you can use your card or mobile phone for everything from bus fares to street food. It is rarely necessary to carry much cash. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; in restaurants, a 10-12.5% service charge is often added to the bill automatically. If it isn't, a 10% tip for good service is standard.
Getting Around United Kingdom
For this multi-city route, the train is the superior choice for families. The UK rail network connects London, York, and Edinburgh with high-speed, comfortable trains that offer 'Family Tickets' and dedicated table seating. Within cities, use 'The Tube' in London (look for step-free access icons on maps) and the excellent bus and tram systems in York and Edinburgh. Avoid driving in the city centers as parking is expensive and traffic can be challenging.
