Day 1: Turkistan, Kazakhstan - The Great Silk Road Legacy
Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi
Start your journey at this UNESCO World Heritage site. This massive turquoise-domed structure is awe-inspiring for adults and features wide open plazas where kids can safely run around. The intricate tile work is a great visual treat.
Hazrat Sultan Reserve Gardens
Directly surrounding the mausoleum are beautifully landscaped gardens and historic ruins. The paths are flat and stroller-friendly, perfect for a slow midday walk. There are plenty of benches under trees for a quick picnic or a rest.
Altyn Samruk Flying Theatre

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Turkistan is during the Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is mild and pleasant for walking, typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Summers can be extremely hot, often exceeding 40°C, which can be difficult for young children. Winters are cold but dry, though many of the outdoor water shows at Karavan-Saray may be limited.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). Turkistan is very affordable; a good meal for a family of four can cost under USD 20. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and the Karavan-Saray complex. However, it is essential to carry some cash (Tenge) for small purchases at the Green Bazaar or for local taxis. Tipping is generally 10% and is often included in the bill at larger establishments.
Getting Around
The main tourist hub around the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Mausoleum and Karavan-Saray is best explored on foot, as it is largely pedestrianized and stroller-friendly. For longer distances, the 'Yandex Go' app is the most reliable and affordable way to hail a taxi; it works just like Uber and allows you to see the price upfront. Public buses are available but can be crowded, so taxis are usually the better option for families.
