Best Time to Visit Timor Leste
The best time to visit Timor Leste is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. For families, the months of June, July, and August offer the most pleasant temperatures and the best road conditions for travel. This is also the best time for snorkeling and diving as water visibility is at its peak. The wet season (November to April) can see heavy rains which may make some rural roads impassable and increase the humidity significantly.
Currency & Money
Timor Leste uses the United States Dollar (USD) as its official currency. While they have their own coins (Centavos) for denominations below one dollar, all paper money is USD. Cash is king here; while major hotels and some restaurants in Dili accept credit cards, you will need plenty of small-denomination cash ($1, $5, $10) for markets, guesthouses, and rural areas. Tipping is not expected but a small amount for exceptional service in restaurants is appreciated.
Getting Around Timor Leste
Intercity travel in Timor Leste is primarily done by road. For families, hiring a private 4WD with a driver is highly recommended for safety, comfort, and flexibility. While public 'microlets' (minibuses) and 'Angguna' (trucks) are available and very cheap, they are often crowded and not ideal for long distances with children. There are occasional domestic flights between Dili and Oecusse, and regular ferry services connect Dili with Atauro Island and Oecusse. Roads are improving but remain winding and sometimes rugged in mountainous areas.
