Day 1: Dushanbe, Tajikistan - Arrival & City Garden Walk

Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
The best time for a family trip to Tajikistan is during late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather in Dushanbe and Khujand is pleasantly warm rather than scorching, and the mountain passes to Iskanderkul are clear of snow. Summer (July-August) can be very hot in the cities (over 40°C), though it is the best time for high-altitude trekking if you plan to extend your stay into the Pamirs.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Tajik Somoni (TJS). While credit cards are increasingly accepted in major hotels and upscale restaurants in Dushanbe and Khujand, Tajikistan remains a predominantly cash-based economy. You should carry enough Somoni for markets, guesthouses, and rural transport. ATMs are available in cities but can occasionally run out of cash, so US Dollars or Euros are good to have as a backup for exchange. Tipping is generally not expected but appreciated in tourist-oriented restaurants.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For families, the most comfortable way to travel between cities is by hiring a private car and driver. While shared taxis are the most common form of transport for locals, they can be cramped and don't allow for flexible stops. Domestic flights between Dushanbe and Khujand are available via Somon Air and can save several hours of driving. Within Dushanbe, the modern bus and trolleybus system is efficient and uses a 'YakKort' payment card, but taxis (via apps like 'Yak Taxi') are very affordable and more convenient for families with strollers.
