Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
The best time for a family trip to Tajikistan is from June to September. During these months, the mountain passes are clear of snow, and the weather at Lake Iskanderkul is pleasantly warm. If you prefer to stay mostly in the cities like Dushanbe and Khujand, April, May, and October offer cooler, more comfortable temperatures for walking with a stroller, as the mid-summer heat in the lowlands can reach over 40°C (104°F).
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Tajik Somoni (TJS). While credit cards are increasingly accepted in major hotels and upscale restaurants in Dushanbe, Tajikistan remains a cash-heavy society. You will need cash for bazaars, small guesthouses, and taxis. ATMs are widely available in Dushanbe and Khujand, but it is wise to carry US Dollars or Euros to exchange as a backup, especially when heading into the Fann Mountains. Tipping is not strictly required but rounding up the bill is appreciated.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For intercity travel, especially with a family, hiring a private 4WD vehicle with a driver is the safest and most comfortable option. The mountain roads can be challenging, and having a local expert allows you to enjoy the scenery. Within Dushanbe, the modern 'Asian Express' bus system is reliable and stroller-friendly. For the long journey between Dushanbe and Khujand, domestic flights operated by Somon Air are a highly recommended time-saver for those traveling with children.
