Day 1: Szentendre, Hungary - Sweet Treats & River Breezes
Main Square (Fő Tér) Exploration
Start your morning in the heart of the town. The Main Square is surrounded by colorful Baroque houses and the iconic Blagovestenska Church. It is a pedestrian-only zone, making it perfect for toddlers to walk around safely while you admire the Merchant's Cross.
Szamos Marzipan Exhibition
A must-visit for families, this museum features incredible sculptures made entirely of marzipan, including a life-sized Michael Jackson and a scale model of the Hungarian Parliament. The ground floor has a wonderful pastry shop where kids can watch confectioners at work.
Danube Promenade (Dunakorzó) Stroll
Enjoy a relaxed walk along the wide, stroller-friendly promenade. The river views are stunning, and there are several benches and grassy areas where the family can take a break. Numerous ice cream parlors line the walk, offering a perfect mid-afternoon treat.

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Szentendre with a family is during the late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, averaging 20°C (68°F), which is ideal for walking. Summer can be quite hot, sometimes reaching 30°C, and the town gets very crowded with day-trippers from Budapest. Winter is charming with its Christmas market, but many outdoor sections of the Skanzen museum may have limited access.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). While Hungary is part of the EU, they do not use the Euro. Most restaurants, museums, and shops in Szentendre accept major credit cards (Visa/Mastercard). However, it is wise to carry some cash for smaller souvenir stalls or public restrooms. Tipping is customary in restaurants; 10-15% is standard if a service charge isn't already included in the bill.
Getting Around
Szentendre's historic center is compact and best explored on foot. For families with strollers, the main streets are manageable, though some side alleys have uneven cobblestones. To get to the Skanzen Open-Air Museum, use the local bus departing from the stand next to the HÉV train station, or take a quick 10-minute taxi. If you are coming from Budapest, the H5 suburban railway (HÉV) is the most reliable transport, but for a scenic treat, consider the Mahart boat service during the summer months.
