South Africa is a playground for families, offering a unique blend of urban sophistication and wild adventure that is surprisingly accessible for those traveling with little ones. This itinerary focuses on the two major hubs, Cape Town and the Greater Johannesburg area, prioritizing comfort, safety, and stroller-friendly locations.
We have designed this route to balance iconic sightseeing with plenty of space for children to run and play. By utilizing domestic flights and private transfers, you can maximize your 72 hours in the Rainbow Nation without the stress of long-distance driving, all while staying within a reasonable daily budget.
Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa - Coastal Wonders & Waterfront Fun
V&A Waterfront Exploration
Start your journey at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. It is entirely stroller-friendly with wide boardwalks and plenty of elevators. Kids will love the Scratch Patch where they can sit among thousands of polished gemstones.
Two Oceans Aquarium
Located right in the Waterfront, this world-class aquarium features a dedicated children's play area and mesmerizing exhibits like the I&J Ocean Exhibit. The ramps make it easy to navigate with a stroller while the toddlers watch the penguins.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
Take a short Uber ride to the cableway. The rotating cable cars are fully accessible and provide a thrilling but safe view for children. At the summit, the pathways near the shop and cafe are flat and manageable for families.
Green Point Urban Park
Wind down at this beautifully landscaped park. It features a massive, fenced-in playground divided by age groups and a biodiversity garden. It is the perfect spot for a relaxed family picnic as the sun sets over the Atlantic.
Day 2: Johannesburg, South Africa - Wildlife & Urban Gardens
Flight to Johannesburg
Take a quick 2-hour domestic flight from Cape Town to OR Tambo International. This is the most comfortable way for families to bridge the distance between the coast and the highveld.
Johannesburg Zoo
Spanning over 50 hectares, this zoo is a leafy sanctuary in the heart of the city. The paths are paved and stroller-friendly, allowing you to see the rare White Lions and Siberian Tigers at a leisurely pace.
Zoo Lake Park
Located just across from the zoo, this public park is a local favorite. You can rent a rowboat for a gentle trip on the lake or simply let the kids enjoy the sprawling lawns and the playground area.
Family Dinner in Rosebank
Head to the Rosebank Mall area. The outdoor courtyard at "The Zone" offers various kid-friendly dining options with open spaces where children can walk around safely under the watchful eye of parents.
Day 3: Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa - The Ultimate Family Safari
Transfer to Pilanesberg
Take a private shuttle or rental car for a 2.5-hour drive to Pilanesberg National Park. This park is malaria-free and set within an ancient volcanic crater, making it ideal for young children.
Closed-Vehicle Game Drive
Unlike open-sided jeeps, using your own rental car or a closed tour vehicle is safer and more comfortable for infants and toddlers. You can spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) from the comfort of your own AC.
Sun City: Valley of Waves
Located right next to the park, this world-famous resort features a man-made beach and a 'Lazy River' that is perfect for a relaxing float with kids. It is a great way to cool off after the morning safari.
Check-in & Relaxation
End your journey by staying overnight at one of the family-oriented lodges nearby to avoid a late-night drive back to the city.
Best Time to Visit South Africa
For a family trip, the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons: Spring (September to November) and Autumn (March to May). The weather is mild, avoiding the intense heat of the African summer and the chilly mornings of winter, making outdoor activities and safari drives much more pleasant for children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). While credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted almost everywhere from hotels to small cafes, it is wise to carry a small amount of cash for tips and local markets. Tipping is standard at 10-15% in restaurants and for tour guides.
Getting Around South Africa
Intercity travel is best handled via domestic flights (FlySafair or Airlink) which are frequent and affordable. Within cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, Uber is highly recommended for families as it provides door-to-door service in clean, modern vehicles. For the trip to Pilanesberg, renting a car provides the most flexibility for diaper changes and snack stops.
