Sokcho is a gem on South Korea's northeast coast, offering a rare combination of dramatic mountain peaks and calming sea views. For families, it is a breath of fresh air—literally. Unlike the frantic pace of Seoul, Sokcho moves at a rhythm that allows for afternoon naps, slow strolls along the pier, and shared meals of sweet and sour fried chicken.
This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy: we prioritize ease of movement, stroller-friendly paths, and activities that keep children entertained without exhausting the parents. From the heights of the Seoraksan Cable Car to the neon lights of the Sokcho Eye, you'll experience the best of the Gangwon province at a pace that works for everyone.
Day 1: Seoraksan Heights and Seaside Delights
Seoraksan National Park Cable Car
Avoid the steep hiking trails and take the cable car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress. It is stroller-friendly up to the station, and the views of the jagged peaks are breathtaking for all ages.
Sinheungsa Temple and Great Buddha
Located a short, flat walk from the cable car station, this temple features a massive bronze Buddha statue. The wide, paved paths make it very easy to navigate with a stroller.
Sokcho Beach
A clean, sandy beach with plenty of photo zones and sculptures. The boardwalk is perfect for a breezy walk while the kids play in the sand.
Sokcho Eye Ferris Wheel
End your first day with a slow rotation on the Sokcho Eye. The enclosed cabins are safe for toddlers and offer a stunning view of the sunset over the East Sea.
Day 2: Cultural Exploration and Lakeside Fun
Sokcho Jungang Market
Explore the vibrant stalls of this traditional market. Kids will love the famous "Dakgangjeong" (sweet crunchy chicken) and the colorful array of fresh fruits.
Abai Village & Gaetbae Boat
Take the famous Gaetbae (a hand-pulled ferry) across the canal to Abai Village. It's a short, fun ride where kids can even help pull the cable.
Cheongchoho Lake Park
This lakeside park features a large playground and wide, flat walking paths. It is the most stroller-accessible spot in the city and perfect for a mid-afternoon break.
Sokcho Expo Tower
Watch the city light up from the observation deck of this futuristic tower. The surrounding plaza is often filled with local families and street performers in the evenings.
Day 3: Local Heritage and Coastal Flavors
Sokcho City Museum
Learn about the local history and the culture of displaced civilians in a fun, interactive way. The museum grounds include traditional houses that kids can explore.
Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion
Perched on the rocks over the ocean, this pavilion offers a fantastic view of the crashing waves. There is a ramp-accessible bridge leading to a secondary seaside pavilion.
Dongmyeong Port Lighthouse
Walk along the breakwater to see the lighthouse and watch the fishing boats come in. It’s a great spot for family photos with the lighthouse backdrop.
Daepo Port Fried Shrimp Alley
For your final dinner, head to Daepo Port. The "Fried Shrimp Alley" is a hit with children, offering various types of freshly fried seafood in a lively atmosphere.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Sokcho is during the Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November). Spring offers mild temperatures and cherry blossoms, while Autumn provides the legendary fall foliage in Seoraksan. Winters can be very cold with heavy snow, and Summers are humid and crowded with beachgoers.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). Credit cards are widely accepted in almost all restaurants, shops, and even market stalls. However, it is useful to carry some cash for the small Gaetbae boat fee and smaller street food vendors. Tipping is not expected or required in South Korea.
Getting Around
Sokcho is compact and easy to navigate. Taxis are affordable and can be hailed easily or booked via the KakaoTaxi app. The local bus system is efficient, but for families with strollers, taxis or renting a car is often the most convenient option to reach the Seoraksan area quickly.
