Skardu is the gateway to some of the world's highest peaks, but it's also a surprisingly wonderful destination for families. This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy, prioritizing comfort, accessible routes, and a relaxed pace that allows children to soak in the natural wonders without the exhaustion of high-altitude trekking.
While northern Pakistan is known for its ruggedness, Skardu offers paved roads to major attractions and lush resorts that serve as perfect basecamps. We have curated these five days to ensure you see the best of the 'Land of Giants' while keeping the daily schedule light enough for little legs and stroller-accessible paths wherever possible.
Day 1: Skardu Town - Arrival and Lakeside Leisure
Arrival at Skardu Airport
Touch down at one of the world's most scenic airports. After a smooth pickup, enjoy the short drive into town, witnessing the dramatic Karakoram range for the first time.
Lunch at Shangrila Resort
Known as 'Heaven on Earth,' this resort surrounds the heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake. The grounds are beautifully manicured and stroller-friendly, making it an easy first stop for lunch and photos.
Lower Kachura Lake Walk
Enjoy a gentle stroll around the lake's perimeter. The flat path is perfect for kids to run around while parents enjoy the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the turquoise water.
Skardu Main Bazaar
End the day with a walk through the local market. It is a great place to pick up local dried apricots and almonds, which make for healthy, kid-approved travel snacks.
Day 2: High Altitudes & Ancient Rock - Satpara and Manthal
Satpara Lake
A short, paved drive from the city center leads to this deep blue glacial lake. There is a large viewing deck where families can safely enjoy the view and take a short boat ride if the weather is calm.
Manthal Buddha Rock
Located on the edge of town, this 8th-century Buddhist relief is easily accessible via a short walk from the road. It’s an educational and manageable history lesson for children.
Polo Ground Visit
Check the local schedule to see if a practice match is happening. Polo is the soul of Baltistan, and kids will love watching the horses and the high-energy atmosphere.
Dinner at Dewan-e-Khas
A family-favorite restaurant in Skardu town offering a mix of local Balti food and continental dishes that cater to pickier eaters in a comfortable indoor setting.
Day 3: Shigar Valley - Royal Heritage and Sand Dunes
Drive to Shigar Valley
The drive to Shigar is one of the most beautiful in the region, featuring views of the Shigar River and wide, sandy plains. The roads are well-maintained for a comfortable family van ride.
Shigar Fort (Fong-Khar)
Now a restored heritage hotel and museum, the fort offers guided tours through its royal chambers. The lush gardens are enclosed and safe for children to explore while you learn about Raja history.
Shigar Blind Lake
A hidden gem nearby where the water is surprisingly still and clear. It’s a perfect spot for a family picnic and some quiet time away from the more crowded tourist spots.
Sarfaranga Cold Desert
Visit the world's highest cold desert. Children will love playing in the soft sand dunes, and the nearby tourist stalls offer short jeep rides across the flat sandy plains.
Day 4: Natural Wonders - Upper Kachura and Katpana
Upper Kachura Lake Exploration
Slightly more rugged than its lower counterpart, this lake involves a 15-minute easy hike. The water is pristine, and local cafes offer fresh trout for a memorable lakeside lunch.
Katpana Village & Desert
Visit the Katpana Desert near the airport, often called the 'Cold Desert of Skardu.' It features unique sand dunes that look even more magical when framed by snow-capped peaks.
Baltistan Wildlife Museum
A small but informative museum that showcases the flora and fauna of the region, including the elusive snow leopard. It's a quick and educational stop for kids.
Stargazing at Katpana
Because of the zero light pollution, the desert at night offers a spectacular view of the Milky Way, a magical experience for children before heading back to the hotel.
Day 5: Culture and Farewell
Organic Village Visit
Take a gentle walk to the Organic Village (Nansoq). It was the first organic village in the region and offers a glimpse into traditional farming and sustainable living in the mountains.
Final Souvenir Shopping
Head back to the town center to buy local handicrafts, such as hand-woven wool shawls and traditional Balti caps, as lasting mementos of your family trip.
Relaxed Lunch at Hotel
Enjoy a final meal with a view of the Indus River before heading to the airport. Most hotels in Skardu offer late check-out for families traveling with young kids.
Transfer to Skardu Airport
A quick 20-minute drive back to the airport for your departure, taking in the last views of the soaring peaks that surround this high-altitude valley.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Skardu with a family is from mid-May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm during the day (20°C to 25°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities. Nights can still be chilly, so packing light jackets for children is essential. Spring (April-May) is beautiful for cherry blossoms, while Autumn (October) offers stunning gold foliage, though temperatures drop significantly.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Pakistani Rupee (PKR). Skardu town has several ATMs (mostly 1Link enabled), but they can be unreliable during power outages or internet disruptions. It is highly recommended to carry sufficient cash for your entire trip, especially for local markets and smaller cafes. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; 100-500 PKR is common for drivers and porters.
Getting Around
Public transport is virtually non-existent for tourists. The most efficient and comfortable way for a family to get around is by hiring a private vehicle with a driver. For paved roads (Shangrila, Shigar, Satpara), a standard sedan or SUV is fine. If you plan to go off-road or into Deosai, a 4x4 Jeep is required. Ensure your vehicle has working seatbelts, which can sometimes be an issue with older local rentals.
