Start your morning with a scenic drive to the Maasin River. While the famous rope swing might be for the older kids, the river itself is calm and peaceful. Families can rent a small paddleboat for a slow, 20-minute cruise down the turquoise water, which is much safer and more relaxing for toddlers than swimming in the open ocean.
Lunch at Shaka Cafe
Head back toward General Luna for a healthy lunch. Shaka is famous for its vibrant acai and fruit bowls, which are always a hit with kids. Daku is the largest of the three islands and features a long stretch of white sand and plenty of shaded huts (kubos). Visit this minimalist sandbar for a quick photo and a run on the sand. Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Siargao with a family is during the dry season, which typically runs from March to October. During these months, the seas are calmer, making boat trips safer for children. If you want to avoid the largest crowds and highest heat, consider visiting in May or June. The wet season (November to February) can bring heavy rains and rougher seas, which may cause boat tours to be cancelled.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Philippine Peso (PHP). While more establishments in General Luna are starting to accept credit cards, Siargao remains a very cash-heavy island. ATMs are available in General Luna but frequently run out of cash or go offline, so it is highly recommended to bring enough cash from Cebu or Manila. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated; 5-10% is generous for good service at restaurants.
Getting Around
The primary mode of transport is the tricycle (a localized motorized rickshaw), which can comfortably fit a family of three or four. For families with strollers or more gear, hiring a private van for the day is the most comfortable and safest option. While many tourists rent motorbikes, it is not recommended for families due to safety concerns and local road conditions. Most attractions in General Luna are within a 10-15 minute drive of each other.
