Day 1: Salalah, Oman - Coastal Heritage & Culture
Al Balid Archaeological Site
Start your morning at this UNESCO World Heritage site. The paths are well-paved and stroller-friendly, allowing you to wander through the ancient ruins of Zafar. The onsite Land of Frankincense Museum is air-conditioned and provides a fascinating look at Oman’s maritime history without being overwhelming for kids.
Lunch at Al Hosn District
Head to the Al Hosn area for a casual lunch. There are several local cafes where you can enjoy fresh grilled fish or traditional Omani rice dishes (Maqbous) in a family-oriented setting. Many restaurants here offer outdoor seating which is great for keeping the kids entertained.
Sultan Qaboos Mosque

Best Time & Weather
The most famous time to visit is during the Khareef season (July to September) when the monsoon rains turn the landscape vibrant green. However, for families, the 'shoulder' season from October to April is also excellent, offering clear blue skies, pleasant temperatures around 25-30°C, and calmer seas for beach activities.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Omani Rial (OMR). While major hotels, malls, and restaurants in Salalah accept international credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), it is highly recommended to carry some cash for purchases at the Al Hafa Souq and for buying fresh fruit or coconuts from roadside stalls. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; 10% is standard in upscale restaurants.
Getting Around
The most efficient and family-friendly way to explore Salalah is by renting a car. Most major international rental agencies operate out of Salalah International Airport.
