Day 1: Arrival and Colonial Heritage
Victoria Park Exploration

Nuwara Eliya Post Office

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Nuwara Eliya is from February to April when the weather is at its clearest and driest. April is particularly vibrant due to the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year festivities, though it can get very crowded. October and November are the wettest months, often bringing heavy afternoon rains. Always pack a sweater and a waterproof jacket, as temperatures can drop significantly in the evenings regardless of the season.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). While larger hotels and upscale restaurants in Nuwara Eliya accept major credit cards, you will need cash for tuk-tuks, small market stalls, and entry fees to parks. Tipping is customary; a small gratuity of 100-200 LKR for porters and 10% at restaurants (if not already included) is appreciated.
Getting Around
Tuk-tuks are the most common way to get around the town center for short trips. For families, the 'PickMe' app is useful for hailing metered rides. For longer trips to Ambewela or Hakgala, it is highly recommended to hire a private van or car through your hotel for comfort and safety. The town center itself is quite walkable, though some roads lack proper sidewalks, so keep a close eye on children.
