Mrauk U is an archaeological wonderland that offers a more intimate and rugged experience than Bagan. For families, it is a playground of history where stone temples emerge from the mist. Our Family Travel Guides approach focuses on a slower pace, ensuring that the little ones don't get overwhelmed by the heat or the history while still hitting all the major landmarks of this former Arakan capital.
While the terrain in Mrauk U can be uneven, many of the primary temple complexes feature wide, flat grassy areas and paved paths that are relatively easy to navigate with a sturdy stroller or a local sidecar. This 6-day itinerary minimizes long-distance travel and maximizes time spent soaking in the atmosphere of one of Southeast Asia's most unique historical sites.

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Mrauk U is during the cool, dry season from November to February. During this time, the weather is pleasant for walking, and you are most likely to experience the famous morning mist that blankets the temples. From March to May, it becomes very hot, which can be taxing for young children. The monsoon season (June to October) brings heavy rains to the Rakhine coast, which may disrupt travel plans and boat schedules.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Myanmar Kyat (MMK). While some high-end hotels might quote prices in USD, almost all daily transactions—including meals, market purchases, and temple fees—are done in Kyat. ATMs are limited in Mrauk U and can be unreliable, so it is essential to carry enough cash from Yangon or Sittwe. Tipping is not mandatory but highly appreciated by guides and sidecar drivers.
Getting Around
In Mrauk U, the most popular and family-friendly way to get around is by 'sidecar' (a bicycle with a side carriage) or a horse-drawn cart. These are slow-paced and allow you to see the sights without the exertion of walking in the heat. For longer distances, such as the trip to Kothaung Paya or the river pier, private taxis or tuk-tuks can be arranged through your hotel. The town center itself is small enough to explore on foot if the weather is mild.
