10-Day Family-Friendly Classic Mongolia Discovery Route
Mongolia is a land of infinite horizons and warm hospitality, making it an unexpectedly wonderful destination for families seeking an educational and outdoor-focused holiday. This itinerary focuses on the 'Classic Route' with a specific emphasis on comfort and accessibility, ensuring that even the youngest travelers can enjoy the magic of the steppe without the strain of long, bumpy drives.
By blending the urban convenience of Ulaanbaatar with the natural wonders of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and the South Gobi, your family will experience authentic nomadic culture. We have prioritized paved roads where possible and included domestic flights to the Gobi to maximize your time exploring rather than sitting in a vehicle, all while keeping the daily budget manageable for savvy travelers.

Day 4: Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Mongolia - Nomadic Life
Visit a Local Nomadic Family

Picnic by the Terelj River
Find a shady spot by the shallow river. The flat grassy banks are ideal for a relaxed family afternoon and safe wading for children.
Gentle Horse Riding
Terelj is the best place for beginners to try horse riding. Many guides are experienced in leading children on calm, well-trained horses.
Stargazing at the Camp
With no light pollution, the Mongolian sky is a classroom of stars. Point out the constellations to the kids before bedtime.
Day 5: Terelj to Ulaanbaatar - The Giant Statue

Day 6: Ulaanbaatar to South Gobi - Flying to the Desert
Domestic Flight to Dalanzadgad
Avoid the 10-hour drive by taking a quick 1.5-hour flight. This is the most family-friendly way to reach the Gobi Desert.
Arrival & Transfer to Gobi Camp
Meet your driver at the small airport. The drive to the luxury camps near the dunes is typically on desert tracks but handled by sturdy 4x4s.

Visit Moltsog Els Dunes
Unlike the massive Khongor dunes, these are more accessible for families. Kids can run up the smaller sandy slopes without getting too tired.

Best Time to Visit Mongolia
The best time for a family trip to Mongolia is during the summer months from mid-June to late August. During this window, the weather is pleasantly warm, the landscapes are at their greenest, and the Naadam Festival (July 11-13) offers incredible cultural displays of wrestling, archery, and horse racing. September is also lovely for its golden colors, though nights begin to get quite chilly. Avoid winter (November to March) unless you are prepared for extreme temperatures as low as -40°C.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Mongolian Tögrög (MNT). While credit cards are widely accepted in Ulaanbaatar’s hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants, cash is essential when traveling to the countryside and smaller districts (sums). ATMs are plentiful in the capital. Tipping is not strictly required but is appreciated for tour guides and drivers (typically 10-15% of the service fee). Always carry some small bills for local nomadic family visits as a sign of appreciation.
Getting Around Mongolia
Getting around Mongolia requires careful planning, especially with children. Within Ulaanbaatar, walking or using taxi apps like UBCab is best. For intercity travel, paved roads connect Ulaanbaatar to Terelj and the Genghis Khan Statue. However, for the Gobi, we highly recommend domestic flights (Aero Mongolia or Hunnu Air) to Dalanzadgad to avoid grueling 10+ hour drives on dirt tracks. For all rural travel, hiring a private 4x4 vehicle with a driver through a reputable agency is the safest and most comfortable option.
