Family Travel Guide: 2 Days in Mondulkiri, Cambodia

Mondulkiri is a breath of fresh air for families looking to swap the heat of Phnom Penh or the crowds of Siem Reap for rolling highlands and cooler temperatures. This Family Travel Guide focuses on a slower pace, ensuring that even the youngest explorers can enjoy the wild beauty of Cambodia's eastern province without feeling rushed.

Known for its elephant sanctuaries and indigenous Bunong culture, Mondulkiri provides a unique educational experience for kids. While the terrain can be hilly, we have selected activities that balance adventure with accessibility, making sure your weekend getaway is as stress-free as possible.

03:00 PM

Pine Tree Plantation (O'Raing)

Just a short drive from the town center, these towering pine forests feel more like Europe than Southeast Asia. The ground is relatively flat and covered in pine needles, making it a great spot for a stroller-friendly walk or a family picnic while the kids run between the trees.

05:30 PM

Sunset at Phnom Dos Kramom

End the day at this hilltop pagoda which offers the best panoramic views of the 'Sea Forest.' It is easily accessible by car or tuk-tuk right to the top, so there is no difficult climbing involved for little legs.

Day 2: Sen Monorom - Cascading Falls and High Highlands

10:00 AM

Bousra Waterfall Exploration

Bousra is the most famous waterfall in Cambodia. The lower level is accessible via a well-maintained wooden walkway, which is safe for children. There are plenty of shaded spots to sit and enjoy the mist from the falls, and local vendors sell snacks and traditional crafts nearby.

Mondulkiri is famous for its coffee. Visit a local plantation like the Mondulkiri Coffee farm to see how the beans are grown. 03:30 PM

Sea Forest (Phnom Bai Chow)

Located in the O'Raing District, this viewpoint looks out over endless undulating green hills that resemble waves in the ocean. It is a fantastic spot for family photos and has a gentle breeze that keeps the afternoon heat at bay.

06:30 PM

Dinner at Chili On Rocks

Finish your trip at this cozy restaurant known for its friendly atmosphere and great views. They serve a variety of kid-friendly options and provide a great vantage point to watch the stars come out over the Mondulkiri highlands.

Best Time & Weather

The best time to visit Mondulkiri with a family is from November to February during the cool, dry season. Temperatures are much milder than the rest of Cambodia, often dropping to 15°C (59°F) at night, so bring light sweaters. The rainy season (June to October) makes the waterfalls spectacular, but some roads can become muddy and difficult for strollers.

Currency & Money

The US Dollar and Cambodian Riel are used interchangeably. For small purchases at markets or for tuk-tuks, Riel is preferred. There are a few ATMs in Sen Monorom town, but they can occasionally be out of service, so it is wise to carry enough cash for your stay. Tipping is not mandatory but highly appreciated by guides and waitstaff.

Getting Around

The easiest way for families to get around is by hiring a private tuk-tuk or a car with a driver for the day. While the town is small, the attractions like Bousra Waterfall are about 40 minutes away. Using the 'PassApp' works in town, but for full-day trips, negotiating a flat rate with a local driver is more convenient and ensures you have transport back to your hotel.
