Day 1: Funchal - Coastal Charms and Colorful Markets
Avenida do Mar Waterfront Stroll
Start your journey with a gentle walk along Funchal's main promenade. This wide, flat, and stroller-friendly path offers beautiful views of the marina and the cruise ships. It is the perfect place for kids to stretch their legs while you soak in the morning sea breeze.
Mercado dos Lavradores
Visit the famous Farmers Market. The ground floor is easily accessible and filled with vibrant displays of exotic fruits like passionfruit-bananas and monstera deliciosa. Let the kids try samples of the unique local produce while you admire the traditional tile work at the entrance.
Rua de Santa Maria Art Walk

Day 3: The West Coast - Fishing Villages and Skywalks
Câmara de Lobos Village

Cabo Girão Skywalk
Drive or take a taxi to one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. The glass skywalk offers a thrilling view straight down to the sea. The viewing platform is completely stroller-accessible and fenced for safety, providing an epic photo opportunity for the whole family.
Levada dos Piornais
Experience a 'Levada' (irrigation channel) walk without the steep drop-offs. The section near the Lido/Amparo area is flat, paved, and follows the water channel through local banana plantations, making it the most kid-friendly 'hike' on the island.
Lido Promenade Farewell Dinner
Celebrate your final night with a walk along the Lido Promenade. This coastal path is lined with gardens and public pools. Choose from numerous family-friendly restaurants that offer outdoor seating and fresh seafood.
Best Time & Weather
Madeira is known as the 'Island of Eternal Spring,' making it a year-round destination. For families, the best time to visit is between May and September when the weather is consistently warm (22°C to 26°C) and rainfall is minimal. The ocean temperatures are also most comfortable for swimming during these months. If you visit in April or May, you will also witness the spectacular Flower Festival.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Funchal and most tourist attractions. However, it is wise to carry some cash for smaller cafes in the villages or for tipping. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% for good service in restaurants is common and appreciated.
Getting Around
Funchal is quite walkable, but the island's steep hills mean you will frequently use the cable cars or 'Teleféricos.' For exploring beyond the capital, renting a car is the most flexible option for families, though taxis and 'Bolt' are readily available and affordable. The yellow city buses (Horários do Funchal) are reliable, but be aware that they can be crowded during peak hours and may be difficult with non-collapsible strollers.
