Best Time to Visit Madagascar
The ideal time for this luxury journey is during the dry season from April to October. September and October are particularly special as they offer excellent weather, lemur babies are born, and it coincides with the humpback whale migration near Sainte-Marie. The rainy season (January to March) should be avoided as many luxury lodges close and cyclones can disrupt travel.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). While luxury lodges accept credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), you will need cash for tips, small local purchases, and markets. Tipping is expected in the tourism industry; a good rule of thumb is 10-15% in high-end restaurants and a daily tip for private guides and drivers. ATMs are available in major cities but are rare in remote lodge areas.
Getting Around Madagascar
In a country where roads are often in poor condition, luxury travel relies heavily on domestic flights and private charters. The national carrier, Tsaradia, connects major hubs, but private charters are recommended for remote areas like Masoala or Anjajavy. Within cities, private chauffeured 4x4 vehicles are the only recommended way to travel comfortably and safely.
