La Fortuna is the crown jewel of Costa Rica for families who want to combine nature with comfort. This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy: we prioritize accessible trails, engaging wildlife encounters, and a relaxed pace that leaves plenty of room for nap times or spontaneous pool splashes. Even though it is part of an Epic Journey, we ensure the daily living cost remains around USD 50.00 by balancing paid attractions with free local gems.
You will find that most activities here are stroller-accessible or only require short, manageable walks. The lush rainforest and the towering Arenal Volcano provide a stunning backdrop for memories that both kids and parents will cherish forever. Let's dive into your three-day adventure in the heart of the rainforest.
Day 1: La Fortuna, Costa Rica - Wildlife & Waterfalls
Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges
Start your journey above the canopy. Mistico Park offers a 3.2km trail that is mostly accessible (they have a specific stroller/wheelchair-friendly path). It is a fantastic way to spot monkeys and colorful birds with a guide.
La Fortuna Waterfall
One of the most famous sights in Costa Rica. While there are 500 steps down to the pool (not stroller friendly), the top viewing platform is easily accessible and offers a breathtaking view of the 70-meter drop into the jungle.
El Salto Swimming Hole
A local favorite and completely free! This natural swimming spot in the river has a rope swing and shallow areas where kids can splash under the watchful eye of parents. It is a great spot to cool off like a local.
La Fortuna Central Park
End your first day with a stroll through the town square. The park has a playground and is surrounded by affordable 'Sodas' (local restaurants) where you can get a hearty 'Casado' for under $10.
Day 2: La Fortuna, Costa Rica - Volcanic Discovery & Hot Springs
Arenal Volcano National Park (Sector Peninsula)
Head to the Peninsula Sector of the park. Unlike the main trails, this sector features paved, flat paths that are perfect for strollers. You get incredible views of Lake Arenal and the volcano without the difficult hike.
Baldi Hot Springs
While there are many hot springs, Baldi is a family favorite because of its dedicated 'Baldi Kids' area with multiple slides and shallow thermal pools. It is safe, fun, and very relaxing for parents.
Bogarin Trail
Located right on the edge of town, this is the best place to see sloths. The trail is flat, easy to navigate, and the guides are experts at spotting these slow-moving creatures for the little ones.
Dinner at Soda La Hormiga
Enjoy an authentic Costa Rican dinner at this highly-rated but budget-friendly eatery. Their fresh fruit juices and chicken Casados are always a hit with kids.
Day 3: La Fortuna, Costa Rica - Chocolate & Lake Life
Lake Arenal Boat Tour
Take a gentle boat ride on the largest lake in Costa Rica. It is a very relaxed way to see the volcano from a different perspective and spot aquatic birds without any strenuous walking.
Don Olivo Chocolate Tour
This is a must for families. It is an interactive farm tour where kids can taste cocoa fruit, learn how chocolate is made, and sample plenty of fresh fruit and sugar cane juice.
Ecocentro Danaus
A small biological reserve that is very manageable for young children. It features a butterfly farm, a frog pond, and a nursery for native plants. It is educational and very easy to walk through.
Rainforest Café (Downtown)
A casual spot in the center of town to celebrate your final night. They offer a mix of local and international kid-friendly options like pizza and pasta in a nice jungle-themed atmosphere.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit La Fortuna is during the dry season, from December to April. This ensures the clearest views of the volcano and the most manageable trail conditions for families. If you visit during the 'green season' (May to November), expect afternoon rain showers, which actually make the hot springs even more enjoyable and the rainforest incredibly vibrant.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC), but US Dollars are widely accepted in almost every shop and restaurant. Credit cards are accepted in most places, though it is always good to have some cash for small 'Sodas' or local markets. Tipping is generally 10% and is often already included in your restaurant bill as a 'service charge'.
Getting Around
La Fortuna is best explored by car or taxi. For families, renting a car is the most convenient option to maintain a relaxed pace. However, official red taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap. Uber is also available in the area and is a reliable, budget-friendly way to move between your hotel and the main attractions.
