Koh Rong Samloem 3-Day Family Itinerary

Welcome to Koh Rong Samloem, the serene sister island of Koh Rong, where the pace of life slows down to a gentle crawl. As part of a larger epic journey through Cambodia, this island offers a much-needed sanctuary for families. Unlike its busier neighbor, Samloem is defined by its turquoise waters that stay shallow for hundreds of meters—an absolute dream for parents with toddlers and young children who want to splash safely.

This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy: minimal transitions, maximum relaxation, and focus on the accessible Saracen Bay area. We’ve designed these three days to be low-stress, ensuring that strollers can navigate the main resort paths and that the children are never too far from a nap-friendly bungalow. Get ready for white sands, fresh seafood, and unforgettable island sunsets.

Day 1: Koh Rong Samloem - Arrival and Saracen Bay Sunsets

10:30 AM

Arrival at Saracen Bay Pier

Catch the speed ferry from Sihanoukville. The pier at Saracen Bay is the most accessible entry point for families, featuring a sturdy dock that handles luggage and strollers easily. Take a slow walk to your beachfront bungalow while the kids enjoy their first glimpse of the crystal-clear water.

💡 Flight Hack: Book your connecting flights to Sihanoukville or your ferry transfers in advance to secure the best family seating. GTVC Speed Boat.
12:30 PM

Lunch at The One Resort

Enjoy a relaxed lunch at this family-centric resort. They offer a kid-friendly menu and, more importantly, a swimming pool right next to the dining area, allowing parents to finish their meal while the kids play within eyesight. The ground here is relatively flat and easy to navigate.

03:00 PM

Shallow Water Play

Saracen Bay is famous for its extremely shallow tide. Spend the afternoon letting the little ones wade out nearly 50 meters in knee-deep, calm water. It is one of the safest swimming spots in Cambodia, requiring very little physical exertion from parents.

06:30 PM

Sunset Dinner at Sol Beach Resort

End your first day with a beachfront dinner. This resort offers high-quality Khmer and international dishes with plenty of space for children to run on the sand while waiting for the food. The atmosphere is upscale yet welcoming to noisy toddlers.

Day 2: Koh Rong Samloem - Marine Life and Sandcastles

09:30 AM

Private Glass-Bottom Boat Tour

Instead of a standard snorkeling tour which can be tiring for kids, hire a private longtail boat with a glass bottom. This allows the children to see the colorful coral and fish without needing to swim in deep water. Most boats depart directly from the Saracen Bay shoreline.

01:00 PM

Picnic at the North End of the Bay

Pack some snacks and fruit and head to the quieter northern end of Saracen Bay. The sand here is incredibly powdery and perfect for building elaborate sandcastles. It is much quieter than the central pier area, offering a peaceful spot for a family nap under the palm trees.

💡 Ticket Hack: Pre-book a private family boat charter to ensure you have life jackets in children's sizes and a flexible schedule. Cambodia Island Tours.
04:00 PM

Hammock Time at Freedom Island Resort

Visit the Freedom Island Resort area to use their famous ocean hammocks. It’s a great photo opportunity and the kids will love the novelty of swinging over the water. The resort also features a natural freshwater pool flowing from the jungle.

07:00 PM

Barbecue on the Beach

Most resorts along the bay set up fresh seafood barbecues in the evening. Pick your fish or skewers and dine with your toes in the sand. The bioluminescent plankton can sometimes be seen late at night near the water's edge if the moon is dim.

Day 3: Koh Rong Samloem - Village Vibes and Island Farewells

10:00 AM

Water Taxi to M'Pai Bay

Take a short, scenic 15-minute water taxi ride to M'Pai Bay. This is a local fishing village where the vibe is more authentic. The main street is paved and stroller-friendly, allowing you to see local Cambodian island life without a difficult trek.

12:30 PM

Lunch at Fishing Hook

Eat at this well-known local spot in M'Pai Bay. They serve incredible fresh seafood and offer a communal, friendly atmosphere that is very welcoming to families. It’s a great way to support the local community before heading back to the resort area.

03:00 PM

Last Dip and Souvenir Shopping

Head back to Saracen Bay for one last swim. Stop by the small boutiques near the piers to pick up handmade sarongs or coconut oil soaps as souvenirs. The shops here are small but carry essential items for families and unique local crafts.

💡 Where to Stay: For the best family experience with easy pier access and great amenities, book a family bungalow early. Saracen Bay Resort.
05:30 PM

Farewell Tropical Mocktails

Gather the family at one of the beach bars for a sunset mocktail. Watch the sky turn purple and orange as you reflect on your island journey. It’s the perfect, low-energy conclusion to your 3-day island escape.

Best Time & Weather

The absolute best time to visit Koh Rong Samloem is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the sea is flat and calm—essential for safe boat transfers with children—and the skies are clear. December and January are the peak months with the most pleasant temperatures, while April and May can become quite hot. Avoid the monsoon season (June to October) as heavy rains can lead to rough boat crossings and limited outdoor activities for kids.

Currency & Money

The primary currencies used are the US Dollar (USD) and the Cambodian Riel (KHR). For small purchases, you will often pay in USD and receive Riel as change. Crucially, there are NO ATMs on Koh Rong Samloem. You must withdraw all the cash you need in Sihanoukville or Phnom Penh before boarding the ferry. While some larger resorts like The One or Sol Beach accept credit cards, they often charge a 3-4% processing fee, and the island's internet can be spotty, making card machines unreliable.

Getting Around

There are no cars or motorbikes on Koh Rong Samloem, which makes it very safe for children. Movement is mostly done on foot along the beaches or via the wooden boardwalks that connect the resorts on Saracen Bay. For traveling between different bays (like Saracen to M'Pai Bay), the best option is a water taxi (longtail boat). These are readily available at any resort pier. If you are staying on Saracen Bay, most of your needs will be within a 15-minute walk, making it the most practical area for families with strollers or small children.
