Welcome to Kinderdijk, a fairytale landscape where 19 monumental windmills rise from the misty polders of the Netherlands. For families, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a breath of fresh air and a chance to step back into the 18th century without the overwhelming crowds of Amsterdam. This Family Travel Guide is designed with slow travel in mind, ensuring even the youngest visitors can enjoy the scenery at their own pace.
We have curated this 4-day plan to be entirely stroller-friendly, with plenty of wide paths and accessible boat options. By basing yourself near the village, you can enjoy early morning views before the day-trippers arrive, making for a truly peaceful weekend retreat that balances education with outdoor play.
Day 1: Kinderdijk - The Heritage Gateway
Wisboomgemaal Visitor Center
Start your journey at the heart of the site. This former pumping station now serves as a visitor center. Watch the multi-screen film that explains the history of the windmills in a way that is engaging for both kids and adults. It’s the perfect, stroller-accessible introduction to the area's water management history.
Lunch at Grand Café Buena Vista
Located right at the entrance of the windmill area, this cafe offers a relaxed atmosphere for families. They have high chairs available and a menu featuring Dutch favorites like 'pannenkoeken' (pancakes) that are always a hit with children.
Museum Windmill Nederwaard
Walk or push the stroller down the paved paths to the Museummolen Nederwaard. This is one of the few mills where you can see the interior. While the upper levels of the mill involve steep ladders, the ground floor and the surrounding yard provide a fascinating look at how a miller’s family of thirteen once lived.
Sunset Walk along the Molenkade
As the primary crowds depart, take a leisurely stroll along the main canal path. The flat, paved trail is ideal for kids to run safely or for a quiet stroller walk. The reflection of the windmills in the water at this hour provides the best photo opportunities of the trip.
Day 2: Kinderdijk - Water & Nature Exploration
Kinderdijk Canal Cruise
Board the Cruiser 'Prins Friso' for a 30-minute boat tour. The boat is wheelchair and stroller accessible, offering a unique perspective of the windmills from the water. It’s a great way to cover distance without tiring out little legs.
Museum Windmill Blokweer
Visit this unique 'polder' mill which features an open yard and a vegetable garden. Unlike the other mills, this one feels like a small farm, complete with goats and chickens that children will love to see. It offers a more interactive, tactile experience for younger travelers.
Polder Picnic
Grab some fresh bread and local cheese from the village shop and head to the designated picnic benches near the Blokweer mill. It’s a low-cost, high-reward way to enjoy the scenery while the kids enjoy the open space.
The Bird Watching Screen
Follow the path toward the nature reserve area of the site. There is a wooden bird-watching screen (Vogelkijkscherm) where families can quietly observe local marsh birds and herons. It’s a peaceful spot that highlights the biodiversity of the Dutch polders.
Day 3: Alblasserdam - Local Life & Cycling
Alblasserdam Harbor Visit
Take the short trip to the neighboring town of Alblasserdam. The harbor area is modern and features a lovely promenade. It’s a great place to see local boats and enjoy the maritime atmosphere of the region.
Lunch at Landvast
Landvast is a cultural center in Alblasserdam with a fantastic terrace overlooking the water. It is very family-friendly, often featuring kid-friendly cinema screenings and plenty of space for strollers in the dining area.
Cycling to Oud-Alblas
Using your rented bikes, follow the flat cycling paths to the picturesque village of Oud-Alblas. The route is safe, separated from cars, and passes through beautiful green fields filled with cows—a quintessentially Dutch experience for the family.
Alblasserdam Playground
End the day at one of the local neighborhood playgrounds. The Dutch take outdoor play seriously, and these well-maintained spots allow children to burn off energy while parents relax on nearby benches.
Day 4: Dordrecht - The Historic Waterbus Adventure
Waterbus Ride to Dordrecht
Take the Waterbus (Line 20/21) from the Kinderdijk or Alblasserdam pier. This high-speed catamaran is a highlight for kids and offers a scenic 15-minute ride to Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland. It is fully stroller accessible.
Hof van Nederland
Visit this interactive museum in the center of Dordrecht. It uses modern technology and storytelling to explain Dutch history, making it surprisingly accessible for older children. The surrounding courtyard is a quiet spot for a break.
Explore the Wolwevershaven
Walk through this historic harbor area filled with old ships and beautiful mansions. The streets are paved but manageable with a stroller. It’s a great area to find a small bakery for a 'stroopwafel' snack.
Dordrechts Museum Garden
Before heading back, visit the gardens of the Dordrechts Museum. While the art inside is world-class, the quiet garden outside is a hidden gem for families to relax before catching the Waterbus back to Kinderdijk.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kinderdijk is from mid-April to mid-October. Spring (April and May) offers the chance to see tulips in nearby regions, while Summer provides the longest days and the 'Illumination Week' in September when the windmills are lit up at night. Winters can be very windy and cold, though seeing the windmills over frozen canals is a rare and beautiful sight if you dress in warm layers.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Euro (EUR). Kinderdijk is largely a cashless site; the visitor center, cafes, and boat tours prefer contactless card payments or major credit cards. While tipping is not mandatory in the Netherlands, rounding up the bill at a restaurant or leaving a 5-10% tip for exceptional service is appreciated.
Getting Around
The best way to get around Kinderdijk and the surrounding area is on foot or by bicycle. The village is compact and the windmill paths are entirely pedestrianized and bike-friendly. For trips to nearby cities like Dordrecht or Rotterdam, the Waterbus is the most efficient and enjoyable method for families. Public buses (Arriva Line 489) also connect Kinderdijk to Rotterdam Kralingse Zoom frequently.
