Best Time to Visit Kenya
The best time for this family itinerary is during the dry seasons: from July to September (which coincides with the Great Migration) and from December to February. These months offer the best wildlife viewing conditions and pleasant, sunny weather at the coast. The 'long rains' usually occur from April to June, which can make some safari tracks muddy and less suitable for young children.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While credit cards are widely accepted in major hotels, malls, and restaurants in Nairobi and Diani, you will need cash for tips, small souvenir shops, and local markets. Tipping is customary in the tourism industry; a small tip for safari guides and hotel staff is always appreciated. ATMs are easily found in all major towns.
Getting Around Kenya
For intercity travel, we recommend a mix of private transfers and the Madaraka Express (SGR) train between Nairobi and Mombasa. For the Maasai Mara, a dedicated safari vehicle with a driver-guide is the safest and most informative option for families. To save time on the return from the coast, domestic flights from Ukunda or Mombasa to Nairobi are highly recommended, as they turn an 8-hour drive into a 1-hour flight.
