Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan
The best time for a family trip to Kazakhstan is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather in both Almaty and Astana is mild and pleasant, perfect for walking in parks. Almaty can be quite hot in July and August, while Astana experiences extremely cold winters with temperatures dropping well below -20°C, which can be difficult for young children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, malls, and major restaurants in Almaty and Astana. However, it is always wise to carry some cash for smaller markets (like the Green Bazaar) or for tipping. Tipping is generally around 10% in restaurants, though many places now include a service charge in the bill.
Getting Around Kazakhstan
Intercity travel is best done via the high-speed Talgo trains, which are clean, fast, and offer private compartments perfect for families. Within Almaty, the metro is beautiful and efficient, though limited in reach; Yandex Go (the local ride-sharing app) is the most convenient way to get around both cities with children. It is affordable and allows you to request cars with child seats in advance.
