Kazakhstan is a surprisingly accessible gem for families seeking a mix of metropolitan energy and breathtaking landscapes. This 4-day route focuses on the country's two major hubs—Almaty and Astana—offering a seamless transition from the leafy, mountain-fringed streets of the south to the futuristic architecture of the north.
We have designed this itinerary with a focus on 'slow travel' to accommodate little ones. You will find plenty of wide pedestrian avenues, modern parks with playgrounds, and high-speed transit options that turn intercity travel into an exciting adventure rather than a chore.
Day 1: Almaty, Kazakhstan - Parks and Golden Domes
Arrival at Almaty International Airport
Touch down in the former capital. The airport is compact and efficient, making it easy to navigate with strollers and luggage.
Panfilov Park & Zenkov Cathedral
Enjoy a gentle stroll through this lush green space. The highlight is the Zenkov (Ascension) Cathedral, a stunning wooden structure built without nails that is sure to fascinate kids with its bright colors.
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar)

Day 2: Almaty, Kazakhstan - Mountain Views & City Lights
Kok Tobe Hill
Take the cable car from the city center up to Kok Tobe. Kids will love the mini-zoo and the Ferris wheel at the top, while parents enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains.
Family Lunch at First President's Park

Day 3: Astana, Kazakhstan - Into the Future
Morning Flight to Astana
Take a short 1.5-hour domestic flight to the capital city. The transition is smooth, and the new airport in Astana is world-class.

The symbol of Kazakhstan. Take the elevator to the observation deck inside the golden sphere for a bird's eye view of the futuristic city grid.
Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center
Designed by Norman Foster, this giant 'tent' houses a shopping mall, an indoor park, and even a tropical beach club on the top floor with sand from the Maldives!
Stroll Along the Ishim River
The waterfront (Embankment) is the heart of evening life in Astana. It is flat, paved, and features various playgrounds and boat tours.
Day 4: Astana, Kazakhstan - Culture and Farewell
Hazrat Sultan Mosque
One of the largest mosques in Central Asia. The white marble and intricate blue patterns are breathtaking. It is accessible and very peaceful for a morning visit.
Astana Music Hall Lunch
Enjoy a final Kazakh feast in a restaurant that looks like a giant vase, offering a spacious environment for families.
National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Visit the 'Hall of Gold' and watch the giant suspended eagle 'fly' during the hourly light show, which is always a favorite for kids.

Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan
The best time for a family trip is during the shoulder seasons: late April to early June, or September to October. During these months, the weather is mild (15°C to 25°C), making it comfortable for walking with a stroller. Almaty is particularly beautiful in spring when the apple blossoms are out, while Astana is best enjoyed before the harsh steppe winter begins in November.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, large restaurants, and malls in both Almaty and Astana. However, it is useful to carry a small amount of cash for market stalls or smaller cafes. Tipping is generally 10% and is often already included in the bill as a service charge.
Getting Around Kazakhstan
For intercity travel between Almaty and Astana, flying is the most comfortable family option, with multiple daily flights via Air Astana or SCAT Airlines. If you have more time, the 'Tulpar-Talgo' high-speed train is a clean and exciting way to see the steppe.
