Day 1: Kampot, Cambodia - Riverside Heritage and Fireflies
Old Market (Phsar Chas) and Colonial Stroll
Start your morning with a gentle walk through the town center. The French colonial architecture is stunning and the streets are relatively quiet. The Old Market area is great for spotting local crafts and grabbing some fresh tropical fruit for the kids to snack on.
Lunch at Epic Arts Café
This social enterprise is a Kampot staple. It is highly inclusive, kid-friendly, and serves excellent Western and Khmer fusion food. The calm atmosphere and creative decor make it a perfect midday break for families.
Kampot Durian Roundabout and Lotus Pond
Take a short walk to the iconic Durian Roundabout for a quick family photo. Afterward, head toward the Lotus Pond near the river. It's a wide-open space where children can run around safely while you enjoy the breeze coming off the water.
Sunset Firefly River Cruise

Kampot Salt Fields
A short tuk-tuk ride from the center leads to the vast salt fields. If you visit during the dry season (January to May), you can see the gleaming white crystals being harvested. It's an educational and visually striking stop that doesn't require much hiking.
La Plantation Pepper Farm
Kampot pepper is world-renowned. La Plantation offers free guided tours that are very professional and stroller-friendly. Kids will enjoy seeing the different types of pepper plants and the resident buffaloes on the property.
River Walk and Old Fish Market
Return to town and stroll along the newly renovated riverfront promenade. Stop by the Old Fish Market, a beautifully restored Art Deco building, which now houses a restaurant and provides a great shaded spot to watch the fishing boats return.
Kampot Night Market
End the day at the night market located near the Durian Roundabout. It's small and manageable, featuring local street food and a few modest carnival-style rides for young children that are very inexpensive.
Day 3: Kampot, Cambodia - Mountain Views and Waterfalls
Bokor National Park Day Trip
Hire a private car or a sturdy tuk-tuk for the drive up Bokor Mountain. The road is well-paved and offers incredible views. The temperature at the top is significantly cooler, providing a nice break from the tropical heat.
Old Catholic Church and Le Bokor Palace
Explore the eerie yet beautiful ruins of the French hill station. The Old Catholic Church is a great spot for photos, and the abandoned palace (now partially renovated) offers a glimpse into Cambodia's complex history.
Popokvil Waterfall
Located within the national park, these falls are best visited after the rains. The walk to the first tier is very short and manageable for kids. It’s a peaceful spot for a family picnic before heading back down the mountain.
Farewell Dinner by the River
Celebrate your final night in Kampot at one of the many riverside restaurants serving fresh crab from nearby Kep, seasoned with Kampot pepper. Many of these spots have high chairs and are very accustomed to hosting families.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kampot is during the cool, dry season from November to February. Temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 24°C to 30°C, making outdoor activities and walking much more comfortable for children. The shoulder season (March to May) can be very hot, while the rainy season (June to October) brings lush green landscapes but may interrupt boat trips and mountain excursions.
Currency & Money
Cambodia operates on a dual-currency system. Both US Dollars (USD) and Cambodian Riel (KHR) are used interchangeably. ATMs in Kampot dispense USD. As of recent changes, small or torn USD bills are often rejected, so carry crisp notes or use Riel for smaller purchases like snacks and tuk-tuk rides. Tipping is not mandatory but highly appreciated; rounding up the bill or leaving a dollar is standard in tourist cafes.
Getting Around
