Sengan-en Garden

Io World Kagoshima Aquarium

Dolphin Port Shopping Mall

Shiroyama Park Observatory
Take the City View Bus up to Shiroyama. A short, flat walking path leads to the observatory which offers the most famous panoramic view of Kagoshima. It’s a great spot for a family photo with the volcano in the background.
Dinner at Amu Plaza
The shopping mall attached to the main train station has a whole floor dedicated to restaurants. From sushi to tonkatsu (breaded pork), there are endless options with plastic food displays that make ordering with kids very easy.
Day 4: Kagoshima, Japan - Samurais & Modern Shopping
Museum of the Meiji Restoration
This interactive museum uses high-tech robots and dioramas to tell the story of Kagoshima's samurai who helped modernize Japan. The 'Restoration Experience Hall' is visually engaging enough to keep children interested while parents learn the history.
Terukuni Shrine
A short walk away is this serene Shinto shrine with a massive white torii gate. The grounds are spacious and flat, providing a peaceful break. Kids often enjoy seeing the traditional charms and the neatly trimmed trees shaped like birds.

Zoo Picnic or Cafe
The zoo has several family-friendly dining areas and plenty of space for a picnic if you prefer to grab some bento boxes from the station beforehand.

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Kagoshima is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (October to November). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant for walking, typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Summers can be very hot and humid with occasional typhoons, while winters are chilly but rarely see snow. Be aware that Sakurajima occasionally releases volcanic ash; if this happens, locals simply use umbrellas, and it adds to the unique experience of the city.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While Kagoshima is increasingly card-friendly, especially in malls like Amu Plaza and larger hotels, many smaller shops, local restaurants, and temples remain cash-only. It is recommended to keep some yen on hand for bus fares and small snacks. Tipping is not practiced in Japan and can sometimes be seen as confusing or impolite, so simply paying the bill as presented is the standard.
Getting Around
Kagoshima is very easy to navigate. The city tram is the most charming and convenient way to travel between Tenmonkan and the Station. For tourists, the 'Kagoshima City View' loop bus is excellent as it stops at all major landmarks including Sengan-en and Shiroyama. Both the tram and the City View bus are stroller-accessible. If you plan to visit the Zoo or Sakurajima, the 'Cute' 1-day or 2-day pass offers unlimited travel on city buses, trams, and the ferry, providing excellent value for families.
