Izmir, the pearl of the Aegean, is perhaps Turkey’s most laid-back metropolis, making it an ideal destination for families seeking a blend of culture and comfort. Unlike the hilly terrain of Istanbul, Izmir’s central waterfront is refreshingly flat and stroller-friendly, allowing you to soak in the sea breeze while the kids enjoy the wide-open promenades.
Our Family Travel Guides approach focuses on minimizing long commutes and maximizing time in green spaces. This two-day itinerary stays within the heart of the city, ensuring you experience the historic Konak district and the modern waterfront at a pace that keeps everyone happy, from toddlers to grandparents.
Day 1: Konak History and the Seaside Promenade
Konak Square and Clock Tower
Start your morning at the city’s heart, Konak Square. The iconic Izmir Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower) is a hit with kids who enjoy the pigeons and the open space. The area is entirely pedestrianized and stroller-accessible, offering great photo opportunities before the midday sun gets too strong.
Kemeraltı Bazaar Exploration
Just a short walk from the square is Kemeraltı, one of the oldest bazaars in the world. While busy, the main thoroughfares are wide enough for strollers. Stop for a traditional Turkish lunch at a local lokanta, where children can try 'pide' (Turkish pizza) or 'köfte' (meatballs) in a casual, welcoming environment.
Konak Pier Shopping and Views
Walk over to Konak Pier, a beautiful structure designed by Gustave Eiffel. It has been converted into a modern shopping center with smooth flooring and clean facilities, making it a perfect spot for a diaper change or a quick snack while looking out over the Aegean Sea.
Sunset at the Kordon
The Kordon is a legendary grass-lined promenade stretching along the coast. Families gather here in the evening to sit on the grass while children run around safely. You can rent a four-person family bicycle or simply enjoy the sunset before heading to one of the many seafood restaurants nearby.
Day 2: Wildlife Adventures and Green Escapes
Izmir Wildlife Park (Sasalı)
Head north to the Sasalı Wildlife Park, one of the best-designed zoos in Europe. It’s an open-air natural habitat rather than a traditional zoo, with wide, paved paths perfect for strollers. The kids will love seeing the giraffes, elephants, and tropical birds in a spacious, ethical environment.
Karşıyaka Ferry Ride
Take a taxi or bus to the Karşıyaka pier and board a ferry back toward the city center. The 20-minute boat ride across the Gulf of Izmir is a highlight for children and offers the best skyline views of the city without the stress of traffic.
Kültürpark Greenery
Located in the heart of the city, Kültürpark is a massive urban park that serves as the city’s lungs. It features a small amusement park (Lunapark), several playgrounds, and paved walking paths shaded by ancient trees. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed afternoon while the kids burn off some energy.
Historical Elevator (Asansör) Dinner
End your trip at the Historical Elevator in the Karataş district. Built in 1907 to connect the lower and upper streets, the ride is free and exciting for kids. At the top, you'll find a cafe with panoramic views, perfect for a final glass of Turkish tea as the city lights up.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Izmir with family is during the shoulder seasons: Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm (20-25°C), making it ideal for walking outdoors. Summers (July and August) can be intensely hot, often exceeding 35°C, which can be taxing for young children and difficult for long stroller walks.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls, and larger restaurants, it is essential to carry some cash for bazaar purchases, public transport cards, and small tips. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; rounding up the bill or leaving 10% in sit-down restaurants is standard practice in Izmir.
Getting Around
Izmir has an excellent and affordable public transport network. The 'Izmirim Kart' covers the Metro, Tram, and Ferries. The Izmir Tram, which runs along the coast, is particularly stroller-friendly with low floors and dedicated spaces. For longer distances, like the Wildlife Park, taxis are affordable and plentiful, though it is recommended to use apps like BiTaksi to ensure fair pricing.
