Best Time to Visit Hungary
The ideal time for this luxury route is during the shoulder seasons: Spring (May to June) and Autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, the vineyards of Tokaj are either in bloom or harvest, and the crowds in Budapest are manageable. December is also a magical time for luxury travelers, as the city transforms into a festive wonderland with some of Europe's best Christmas markets and thermal baths providing a warm sanctuary.
Currency & Money
The official currency of Hungary is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). While Hungary is part of the EU, it does not use the Euro (though some luxury hotels and restaurants may accept it at a poor exchange rate). Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are universally accepted in upscale establishments, but it is wise to carry a small amount of cash for smaller boutiques or tipping. Tipping is customary; 10-15% is standard for excellent service in high-end restaurants if a service charge isn't already included.
Getting Around Hungary
For a luxury experience, we recommend a combination of private chauffeur transfers for shorter distances (like Budapest to Lake Balaton) and First-Class rail for longer journeys. The MÁV InterCity trains offer comfortable first-class cabins with catering. Within Budapest, the historic M1 metro line is a charming way to see Andrássy Avenue, but private car services or 'Bolt' (the local ride-hailing app) are the preferred methods for seamless door-to-door luxury travel.
