While many travelers rush through to reach Yangshuo, staying within Guilin city for three days offers a chance to experience authentic local life without the constant packing and unpacking. With an average living cost of around $35 per day for meals and local transit, it’s an affordable paradise for families seeking an epic journey into China's natural wonders.
Day 1: Guilin, China - City Landmarks and Riverside Strolls
Elephant Trunk Hill
Start your journey at the iconic symbol of the city. This park is largely flat and stroller-accessible, making it easy to view the natural archway formed by the rock meeting the Li River. It’s a perfect spot for the kids to see the 'elephant' drinking from the water.
Zhengyang Pedestrian Street Lunch
A short walk from the hill, this car-free zone is ideal for families. You can find everything from local Guilin Rice Noodles to familiar Western options. The lack of traffic makes it a safe environment for kids to stretch their legs.
Jingjiang Princes' Palace
Explore this ancient inner city that predates the Forbidden City. The grounds are spacious and flat, featuring beautiful Ming-dynasty architecture. The 'Solitary Beauty Peak' is located here; while the climb might be tough with a stroller, the surrounding gardens are serene and easy to navigate.
Sun and Moon Pagodas

Reed Flute Cave

Seven Star Park

Li River Sightseeing (Mopanshan Pier)
Take a short taxi or shuttle to the pier for a morning boat trip. For families, the larger three-star or four-star boats are best as they offer air conditioning, lunch buffets, and clean restrooms. The scenery of the karst peaks is exactly what you see on the 20 Yuan banknote.
West Street Exploration
While technically in Yangshuo, a visit here is the standard highlight of a Guilin trip. West Street is vibrant and filled with shops and cafes. It is mostly pedestrianized, allowing for a fun afternoon of souvenir hunting and ice cream eating.
Bamboo Raft Experience (Yulong River)
For a quieter experience, take a manual bamboo raft on the Yulong River. It’s a slow, gentle ride that is safe for children. It offers a closer look at the rural landscape and water buffalo grazing along the banks.
Return to Guilin Center

Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Guilin with a family is during the spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is mild and the Li River water levels are usually ideal for cruises. Summers can be very hot and humid with occasional heavy rain, which might be taxing for young children, while winters are chilly and damp.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). While major hotels and large malls accept international credit cards, most daily transactions are done via mobile payment apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay. It is highly recommended to set these up with your international card before arrival. Carrying some cash for small street vendors is still useful, and tipping is not customary in Guilin.
Getting Around
Guilin is well-served by a network of public buses, but for families, taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are incredibly affordable and convenient. Most city trips will cost between $2 and $5 USD.
