From the iconic clock tower perched on a hill to interactive children's museums and lush green parks, Graz offers plenty of variety. Most of the city center is pedestrianized, making it exceptionally stroller-friendly. We have grouped activities by district to minimize travel time, allowing you to soak in the Styrian hospitality at a gentle, family-oriented pace.
Day 1: Graz Old Town - Iconic Views and Island Fun
Schlossberg & Uhrturm
Start your trip by heading up the Schlossberg. To keep it kid-friendly and stroller-accessible, take the Schlossbergbahn funicular. At the top, you'll find the Uhrturm (Clock Tower), the symbol of Graz, offering panoramic views of the red-roofed city. There is plenty of space for toddlers to wander safely in the gardens.
Hauptplatz Lunch
Descend via the glass elevator (Schlossberg Lift) and walk to the Hauptplatz (Main Square). This central hub is filled with food stalls selling local sausages and snacks, perfect for a quick, fuss-free family lunch. Kids will love watching the colorful trams pass by.
Murinsel (Mur Island)
Walk to the Murinsel, a futuristic steel island floating in the middle of the Mur River. It features a trendy cafe and a small play area for children. It is fully accessible via ramps, making it a breeze for strollers and a unique spot for photos.
Traditional Dinner at Der Steirer

Day 2: Lend & Gries - Art and Play
Kindermuseum FRida & freD
Located in the Augarten park, this world-class children's museum is a must. It features highly interactive exhibits designed for different age groups, encouraging kids to touch, play, and learn. It is the highlight of any family trip to Graz.
Kunsthaus Graz (The Friendly Alien)
Cross the river to see the Kunsthaus, an architectural marvel known as the 'Friendly Alien.' Even if you don't enter the galleries, the building's bizarre shape is a hit with kids. The surrounding Lend district is filled with hip, accessible cafes for lunch.
Stadtpark Exploration
Head to the Stadtpark, the city's largest green space. It is entirely stroller-friendly with wide paths, a large playground near the Paulustor entrance, and plenty of benches for parents to rest while the kids burn off energy.
Lendplatz Dinner
End your day at Lendplatz. During the evening, the market stalls often turn into small eateries. It’s a very local, relaxed vibe where children are welcome to roam the pedestrian area while you enjoy a glass of local Schilcher wine.
Day 3: Eggenberg - Peacocks and Palaces
Schloss Eggenberg
Take Tram Line 1 directly to this UNESCO World Heritage site. The palace grounds are magnificent and home to many free-roaming peacocks, which are always a delight for children. The park is flat and very easy to navigate with a stroller.
Archaeology Museum Eggenberg
Located within the palace grounds, this museum is surprisingly engaging for older kids, featuring the famous Strettweg Cult Wagon. The gardens nearby offer the perfect spot for a family picnic if the weather is nice.
Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten)
Head back toward the Geidorf district to visit the Botanical Garden. The futuristic glass houses are warm and fascinating for children, featuring exotic plants and cacti in a controlled, easy-to-walk environment.
Farewell Dinner at Gösser Bräu
Celebrate your final night at one of Graz's most famous breweries. Gösser Bräu has a large, family-friendly dining hall and a traditional menu that caters to even the pickiest eaters with favorites like Wiener Schnitzel.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Graz is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for walking the city streets and enjoying the parks. Summers can be warm but are great for outdoor festivals. If you enjoy festive atmospheres, December is magical with its many child-friendly Christmas markets and the famous Ice Crib.
Currency & Money
Austria uses the Euro (€). Graz is very modern, and credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in almost all shops, museums, and restaurants. However, it is always a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for smaller market stalls or traditional bakeries. Tipping is customary; rounding up the bill or adding about 5-10% for good service in restaurants is standard practice.
Getting Around
Graz is a very walkable city, especially the historic center. For longer distances, the tram network is excellent, reliable, and features low-floor cars that are easy for strollers. A unique feature is the 'Altstadtbim'—all trams within the immediate city center (between Jakominiplatz and Hauptplatz plus one additional stop in each direction) are completely free to use. For families, this is a great way to skip a few blocks of walking at no cost.
