3-Day Ultra-Budget Backpacking Guide to Grand Baie
Grand Baie is often seen as a luxury playground, but for the savvy backpacker, it’s a gateway to some of the most stunning free landscapes in the Indian Ocean. By swapping private resorts for local hostels and high-end dining for the incredible street food culture, you can stretch your dollars while soaking up the tropical sun.
This itinerary is designed for those on an epic journey through Africa or the Indian Ocean, focusing on the vibrant hostel life, public transport, and the natural beauty of the island's northern coast without the hefty price tag.
Day 1: Grand Baie, Mauritius - Beaches and Street Eats
La Cuvette Beach
Start your journey at this hidden gem. Tucked away from the main road, this small, sheltered cove offers crystal clear water and a more intimate vibe than the larger public beaches. It’s free to enter and perfect for a morning swim.
Grand Baie Public Beach & Street Food
Head to the main public beach area. Instead of a restaurant, look for the colorful food trucks parked along the coastal road. Grab a 'Dholl Puri' (lentil-filled flatbread) or 'Boulettes' (steamed dumplings) for a few dollars.
Shiv Kalyan Vath Mandir
Visit this beautiful and colorful Tamil temple. It is one of the most prominent religious sites in Grand Baie, offering a peaceful atmosphere and a glimpse into the island's deep Indian heritage. Remember to dress modestly.
Sunset at Grand Baie Waterfront
Join the locals for a stroll along the waterfront as the sun dips below the horizon. The view of the bobbing sailboats in the bay is iconic and completely free.
Day 2: Grand Baie, Mauritius - Local Markets and Northern Icons
Grand Baie Bazaar
Navigate the narrow alleys of the bazaar. While many items are aimed at tourists, it’s a great place to practice your haggling skills for local spices, sarongs, or handcrafted souvenirs. It’s a sensory explosion of colors and scents.
Cap Malheureux Day Trip
Hop on the local bus (the North Express) for a 15-minute ride to Cap Malheureux. Visit the famous Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux, the red-roofed church that sits right on the edge of the turquoise sea.
Anse La Raie Beach
A short walk from the Red Church, this beach is a popular spot for kitesurfers. Find a spot under a Filao tree and watch the colorful kites dance against the backdrop of Coin de Mire island.
Super U Food Court & Night Stalls
The area around the Super U hypermarket becomes a hub of activity at night. The food court and nearby street stalls offer some of the cheapest and most authentic Biryani and Gato Piment (chili cakes) in town.
Day 3: Grand Baie, Mauritius - Coastal Trekking and Relaxation
Mon Choisy Beach
Take a short bus or bike ride to Mon Choisy, the longest public beach in the north. The white sand stretches for miles, meaning you can always find a quiet spot away from the crowds to relax and read a book.
Coastal Walk to Trou aux Biches
From Mon Choisy, follow the shoreline south towards Trou aux Biches. This scenic walk takes you past luxury resorts (which you can admire from the public shoreline) and hidden rocky outcrops perfect for snorkeling.
Pereybere Beach
Head back towards Grand Baie and stop at Pereybere. This is a local favorite because the water is deep and incredibly clear. It’s the perfect place for one final swim in the warm Indian Ocean waters.
Hostel Social Night
End your 3-day journey by swapping stories with other travelers at your hostel. Most backpacker spots in Grand Baie have communal kitchens where you can cook a cheap meal using fresh ingredients from the local market.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Grand Baie is during the Mauritian winter (May to October) when the weather is cooler and drier, with temperatures averaging 20-26°C. This is perfect for backpacking as you avoid the intense humidity and the cyclone season (January to March).
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). While cards are accepted in supermarkets and hotels, you will need cash for the local buses, the Bazaar, and street food stalls. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up the bill at small eateries is appreciated.
Getting Around
The most budget-friendly way to get around is the local bus system. Buses run frequently between Grand Baie and nearby beaches like Mon Choisy and Cap Malheureux for just a few cents. For more freedom, consider renting a bicycle from your hostel for around $10 a day.
