Day 1: Quito, Ecuador - Arrival & Historic Exploration
Arrival at Mariscal Sucre International Airport
Touch down in Quito and take a pre-booked private transfer to your hotel. The airport is about 45 minutes from the city center, and private cars are recommended for families with luggage and strollers.
Lunch at Plaza Grande
Enjoy a relaxed lunch at one of the traditional restaurants overlooking the Presidential Palace. The plaza is wide and flat, making it easy to maneuver a stroller while enjoying the local street performers.
Calle La Ronda
Walk through this beautifully restored colonial street. In the afternoon, it is quiet and safe for kids to explore traditional craft shops and try 'canelazo' (the non-alcoholic version for kids) or artisan chocolate.
Itchimbía Park Sunset
Head to this hilltop park for a stunning view of the city. The park features flat walking paths and a modern glass palace, providing plenty of space for children to run around before dinner.
Day 2: Quito, Ecuador - Science at the Center of the Earth
Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World)
Visit the iconic monument where the equator passes through. The complex is very family-friendly with paved paths and several small museums explaining the physics of the equator.
Intiñan Site Museum
Located right next to the main monument, this interactive museum is a favorite for kids. They can participate in experiments like balancing an egg on a nail or watching water swirl in different directions.
Quito Botanical Garden
Located in Parque La Carolina, this garden is entirely stroller-accessible and features a stunning orchidarium and a dedicated children's play area nestled among native Andean plants.
Transfer to Baños de Agua Santa
Board a comfortable executive van for a 3.5-hour scenic drive south to Baños. This route is paved and offers beautiful views of the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes'.
Day 3: Baños, Ecuador - Waterfalls & Family Adventure
Pailón del Diablo (Devil’s Cauldron)
Visit one of Ecuador's most famous waterfalls. Use the 'new' entrance which offers a much easier, stroller-friendly path to the viewing platforms compared to the traditional steep stairs.
Tarabita Cable Car Ride
Take a ride on a traditional 'Tarabita' (cable car) across the Pastaza River gorge. It is a thrilling but very safe experience for children, offering a bird's-eye view of the Manto de la Novia waterfall.
San Martín Zoo
Spend the afternoon at this zoo located on the edge of town. It specializes in native Ecuadorian animals like tapirs, bears, and colorful parrots, with easy walking paths for families.
Downtown Baños Exploration
Walk through the town center, visit the Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Water, and watch local vendors pull 'melcocha' (marshmallow-like taffy) in the doorways of their shops.
Day 4: Baños, Ecuador - Scenic Swings & Relaxation
Casa del Árbol (The Treehouse)
Home to the famous 'Swing at the End of the World'. While the big swing is for older kids and adults, the site has smaller, safer swings for toddlers and a beautiful garden with views of Tungurahua Volcano.
Termas de la Virgen
Before heading back, visit the newly renovated section of the thermal baths. They offer family-sized pools with varying temperatures that are clean, safe, and very relaxing for the little ones.
Lunch at Mercado Central
Enjoy one last local meal. The food stalls here are famous for 'llapingachos' (potato cakes). It is a vibrant, clean market where families can eat well on a budget.
Return to Quito
Relax on the comfortable drive back to Quito. Most families choose to stay near the airport on their final night for a stress-free departure the following morning.
Best Time to Visit Ecuador
Ecuador is a year-round destination due to its equatorial location. However, for the Highlands (Quito and Baños), the dry season from June to September is ideal for family travel as it offers the clearest skies and most predictable weather for outdoor activities. The 'inter-dry' season in December and January is also a popular choice for clear mornings and festive atmospheres.
Currency & Money
Ecuador uses the US Dollar (USD) as its official currency. This makes budgeting very straightforward for many international travelers. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and upscale restaurants in Quito, but you should carry small denominations of cash ($1, $5, and $10 bills) for markets, taxis, and small shops in Baños. Tipping is generally 10% in restaurants if not already included.
Getting Around Ecuador
For families, the most comfortable way to travel between Quito and Baños is via private transfer or 'Turis-paps' (tourist shuttles). These offer door-to-door service and the flexibility to stop for bathroom breaks. Within Quito, the new Metro system is fast and modern, though Uber and registered yellow taxis remain the most convenient stroller-friendly options for short hops between attractions.
