3-Day Family Weekend Escape to Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
Discovery Bay is a unique, car-free residential oasis on Lantau Island that feels worlds away from the frantic pace of central Hong Kong. Known for its wide, stroller-friendly promenades and resort-like atmosphere, it has become the ultimate destination for our Family Travel Guides series, offering a rare blend of safety, fresh air, and kid-centric amenities.
For families looking for a weekend getaway, Discovery Bay provides a seamless experience where the most stressful decision you'll make is whether to hit the beach or the playground. This itinerary is designed to be low-stress, keeping transit times short and focusing on spots where kids can roam free while parents enjoy the coastal views.
Day 1: Beach Fun & Plaza Vibes
Arrival and Tai Pak Beach
Begin your trip by arriving via the iconic ferry from Central. Head straight to Tai Pak Beach, a private beach that is open to the public. It features a massive wooden playground right on the sand, which is a dream for toddlers and older children alike.
Lunch at D'Deck
Walk just a few steps from the beach to D'Deck, the largest oceanfront alfresco dining terminal in Hong Kong. Most restaurants here provide high chairs and kid-friendly menus with plenty of space for strollers.
Main Plaza Exploration
Spend the afternoon exploring the shops and open spaces of the Main Plaza. There is often live music or community markets happening here, providing a safe, car-free environment for kids to run around while you grab a coffee.
Sunset Dinner by the Water
Choose one of the many casual eateries at the plaza. If you dine at designated D'Deck restaurants, you can often redeem a free ferry ride back to Central, though since you are staying the night, it's just a great spot for a relaxed evening meal.
Day 2: Adventure & Epic Play
DB North Plaza & Central Park
Take the internal shuttle bus (T4 or T9) to North Plaza. Start with a walk through Discovery Bay Central Park, which features beautiful ponds, ducks, and wide paved paths perfect for strollers.
EpicLand Indoor Playroom
Located in North Plaza, EpicLand is one of Hong Kong's largest indoor family entertainment centers. It features slides, climbing frames, and a dedicated toddler area to burn off energy regardless of the weather.
Casual Lunch at North Plaza
North Plaza offers a more local and quiet vibe than the Main Plaza. There are several family-friendly cafes and a large supermarket if you prefer to grab supplies for a picnic in the nearby park.
Love Lock Promenade
Take a gentle stroll along the coastline towards the Love Lock Promenade. It's a picturesque spot for family photos with the white horse-drawn carriages that occasionally pass by from the nearby hotel.
Pizza Night
Enjoy a relaxed dinner at one of the North Plaza pizza spots. The atmosphere here is very welcoming to families with young children, and the open courtyard allows kids to play nearby while you finish your meal.
Day 3: Nature & Island Vibes
Discovery Bay Ice Rink
Visit the world-class ice rink in the Main Plaza. It is beginner-friendly and offers 'penguins' for young children to hold onto while they learn to skate, making it a great indoor morning activity.
Picnic at the Amphitheatre
Grab some fresh sandwiches and fruit from the local bakery and head to the open-air amphitheatre near the pier. It's a great spot for a low-cost, high-view lunch before your final afternoon activity.
Lookout Point Hike (Stroller-Friendly Version)
Follow the paved paths up towards the reservoir. While some hiking trails are rugged, the main roads leading up offer stunning views of the South China Sea and are manageable with a sturdy stroller.
Farewell Ferry Ride
Head back to the main pier for your departure. The 25-minute ferry ride back to Central is an attraction in itself, offering great views of the Hong Kong skyline and the surrounding islands.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Discovery Bay is from October to December when the weather is dry, sunny, and mild. This is perfect for outdoor play and beach time. Spring (March to April) is also pleasant, though it can be humid. Summer (June to August) is very hot and prone to typhoons, so be prepared for indoor activities if you visit during this time.
Currency & Money
Discovery Bay uses the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). While credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in the plazas and restaurants, you will definitely need an Octopus Card for the ferries and internal shuttle buses. Tipping is generally not expected in casual cafes, but a 10% service charge is usually added to the bill in sit-down restaurants.
Getting Around
Discovery Bay is a car-free zone. Private cars are not allowed. You can get around using the very efficient internal shuttle bus system, which is stroller-accessible. Walking is the most popular way to get between the Main Plaza and the beach. To get to Discovery Bay, most visitors take the 24-hour ferry from Central Pier 3 or the shuttle bus from Sunny Bay MTR station.
