Denpasar is often overlooked for the southern beaches, but for families, the Balinese capital offers a refreshing change of pace. This itinerary follows our Family Travel Guides philosophy: prioritizing ease of movement, kid-friendly environments, and authentic cultural experiences that won't overwhelm the little ones.
From the wide-open green spaces of Renon to the calm, paved boardwalks of Sanur, you will find Denpasar to be surprisingly accessible. With an average daily cost of just USD 35, it is an affordable way to immerse your family in the Island of the Gods.
Day 1: Denpasar, Indonesia - Monuments and Coastal Breezes
Bajra Sandhi Monument
Start your morning at this iconic landmark in the heart of Renon. The monument is surrounded by a massive green park with paved paths, making it perfectly stroller-accessible. While the climb to the top might be steep for toddlers, the ground-level dioramas showcasing Bali's history are visually engaging for older children.
I Am Bali Interactive Museum
Located within the base of the Bajra Sandhi Monument, this 3D trick-art museum is a hit for families. It provides a cool, air-conditioned escape from the midday sun where kids can interact with dozens of optical illusion paintings, perfect for fun family photos.
Lapangan Puputan Renon
Let the kids burn off some energy at the public park surrounding the monument. It is a local favorite where you will see families flying kites or jogging. The wide sidewalks are ideal for a relaxed stroll before heading toward the coast.
Sanur Beach Boardwalk
Technically part of the Denpasar district, Sanur is the ultimate family spot. The paved coastal path stretches for kilometers, allowing for a smooth stroller walk next to the calm ocean. End your day with a beachside dinner where kids can play in the sand while you enjoy the sea breeze.
Day 2: Denpasar, Indonesia - Heritage and River Walks
Bali Museum (Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali)
Explore Balinese architecture and history in this beautiful complex. The museum features several pavilions with quiet courtyards that are safe for kids to wander in. It is located right next to Puputan Square, providing a central and easy-to-reach cultural morning.
Pura Jagatnatha
Located right next to the museum, this is the largest temple in Denpasar. It is a stunning example of local stone carving. While respectful silence is required, the open-air layout and intricate shrines are fascinating for children to observe.
Kumbasari Art Market
Across the river from the main market, Kumbasari offers a more organized shopping experience. It is a great place to pick up handmade puppets or colorful Balinese clothes. The ground floor is manageable for families looking for unique souvenirs at local prices.
Badung River Walk
Recently revitalized, the banks of the Badung River near the markets have been turned into a clean, lighted walkway. In the evening, the area comes alive with fountain lights and seating areas, making it a surprisingly modern and pleasant spot for a family walk before dinner.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Denpasar is during the dry season from April to October. Temperatures are consistent around 27-30°C (80-86°F), but the humidity is much lower, making outdoor walks with a stroller far more comfortable. If you visit during the wet season (November to March), plan your museum visits for the afternoon when tropical downpours are most frequent.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While large hotels and restaurants in the Renon and Sanur areas accept credit cards (Visa/Mastercard), you will need cash for entrance fees at the Bali Museum and for small purchases at Kumbasari Market. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up the bill or leaving IDR 10,000-20,000 for good service is widely appreciated.
Getting Around
Denpasar is best navigated using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek, which offer both cars and motorbikes. For families, 'GrabCar' is the safest and most comfortable option, often costing only a few dollars to get across the city. Many of the sidewalks in central Denpasar can be uneven, so a lightweight 'travel stroller' is highly recommended over a bulky one.
